SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball game defeated Furman 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field to even the weekend Southern Conference series. The Terriers scored three runs in the second inning and added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to secure the win. The rubber match will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m., the final home game of the season for Wofford. Â

Wofford is 34-18 overall and 11-8 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 23-27 overall and 10-10 in conference play. Wofford pitcher Luke Leftwich had nine strikeouts in seven innings on the mound and Conor Clancey had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Terriers. Kody Ruedisili added three hits and Derek Hirsh had two RBIs. The Paladins were led by Jordan Simpson with two runs and an RBI.

The Paladins were retired in order in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the bottom of the first, James Plaisted walked and a single by Conor Clancey gave Wofford runners on the corners. Clancey stole second, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance. Furman had a pair of singles in the top of the second, but a double play ended the half inning.

Kody Ruedisili led off the bottom of the second with a single. With one out, Max McDougald singled up the middle to give Wofford runners on the corners. A double down the left line by Derek Hirsch scored both runners. Matt Ramsay had a two out single through the left side to score Hirsch for a 3-0 lead. Furman was retired in order in the top of the third inning.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch and Kody Ruedisili had a single and advanced to second on the throw. With runners in scoring position, back-to-back plays at the plate ended the third inning.

Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning and Furman went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Ramsay doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and moved to third on a ground out. A sacrifice fly by Conor Clancey scored Ramsay for a 4-0 score after five innings.

Furman led off the top of the sixth with a walk, ending a stretch of ten straight Paladins retired. A hit by pitch and single loaded the bases. After a strikeout, a fielder's choice erased the lead-off runner at home plate. With the bases still loaded, a strikeout ended the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kody Ruedisili led off with a double. With two outs, Derek Hirsch safely bunted and Ruedisili was able to score on a throwing error by the pitcher to make it 5-0. Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch, but Wofford left two runners on base to end the sixth inning.

Jordan Simpson hit a solo home run to start the seventh inning. After a pair of strikeouts, Ryan Morse hit a double before a ground out ended send the game to the stretch. James Plaisted led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center. Conor Clancey followed with a home run to left center for a 7-1 lead. It was his 10th home run of the season and 61st RBI of the year, both of which lead the team. Wofford left one runner on base to end the seventh inning.

The Paladins opened the eighth inning with a walk and a single gave them runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly made it a 7-2 score. With two outs and two runners on base, a fly ball ended the top half. The Terriers had a runner on base when a double play ended the bottom of the eighth inning. Furman led off the top of the ninth with a double by Cameron Whitehead. With two outs, a wild pitch advanced the runner to third base. A fly ball to right field ended the game.

Wofford starting pitcher Luke Leftwich (7-2) threw seven innings with one run allowed on five hits. He had nine strikeouts and only one walk. He has 101 strikeouts on the season, becoming only the fifth player in school history to reach the century mark. Jacob Condra-Bogan worked two-thirds of an inning with one run allowed on two hits and a walk. David Ehmen faced one batter and earned the final out the eighth inning. Will Stillman threw the ninth and allowed one hit.

Matthew Quarles (5-2) started for Furman and went 5.2 innings with five runs allowed on nine hits, along with four strikeouts. Ryan Griffith faced one batter and had one out. Steven Fondu gave up two runs on three hits in an inning on the mound. Ted Andrews worked the eighth inning and did not allow a hit.

The Terriers and Paladins will complete the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, Wofford will honor six seniors in their final home game at Russell C. King Field.
