WBB: Terriers Fade Late against Furman

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite leading at halftime 34-28, the women's basketball team was outscored down the stretch and lost to the Furman Paladins 70-61 Saturday afternoon in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers (5-11, 0-3 SoCon) were matching Furman (9-9, 2-1 SoCon) shot for shot through the first period, with both teams knotted at 18 apiece after one period of play. The Terriers then outscored the Paladins 16-10 in the second period, but the home team was outscored 42-27 in the second half to make the final score.

"I thought we had some really good moments today," Head Coach Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said after the game. "We limited our turnovers and played with a lot of energy and passion. We just did not knock down a couple of shots here and there. We just needed to have a little more time at the end of the game, but we understand with the level of effort what it is going to take. We just didn't have a couple of shots go at the right time. When those shots go in, we will see a different result. I thought our players competed and fought tooth and nail with them today."

Wofford led by as many as seven points in the second period after guard Maria Corella hit a three pointer with 6:47 to go to give the Terriers a 25-18 lead. Furman however used a 8-0 run over the next 3:44 of play to take a 26-25 lead.

Terrier guard Ashton Fleming made layups on consecutive possessions to give Wofford a three-point lead again. Guard Chanel Stokes also made a fast-break layup on the next Terrier possession, making it 31-26 Wofford with 2:22 to go in the half. After a Furman jumper, Corella closed out the first half with a three to beat the buzzer and give the Terriers their 34-28 halftime advantage.

Stokes made the first bucket of the second half to make it 36-28 Terriers, but Furman slowly chipped away at Wofford's lead before Paladin forward Holli Wilkins tied the game at 47 with a layup heading into the fourth period.

Terrier guard Jordan Frazier started the fourth period for Wofford with a three, but the Paladins hit two threes of their own and had a 53-50 advantage with 7:44 left. Furman then outscored Wofford 17-11 over the remainder of the game to close out the win.

The Paladins shot an even 50 percent from the floor (24-48) in the game, while the Terriers shot 22-65 (33.8 percent). Furman was especially good from deep, hitting 11-17 three point shots while Wofford only made 7-23 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Terriers did outrebound the Paladins 38-32 in the game, including a 15-4 advantage on the offensive glass. The Terriers also had the turnover advantage, committing only 14 compared to the Paladins' 17.

Fleming recorded her third double-double of the season in the loss, leading the Terriers with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Corella had 11 points and forward Kentra Washington chipped in 10 points as well.

Guard Whitney Bunn led the Paladins offensively, scoring 26 points on 9-10 shooting (4-4 from three). Wilkins and guard Kelsey Ellis also scored in double figures, putting up 16 and 14 points respectively. Forward Tiara Wood led the Paladins with seven rebounds.

The loss extends Wofford's recent losing streak to three games and marks the fifth straight loss against the Paladins. The Terriers are now 5-4 in Benjamin Johnson Arena this season.

Wofford's next game is Monday night, when the Terriers take on NAIA-affiliated Montreat College at 6 p.m. in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
