SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Women's basketball senior guard
Jordan Frazier scored her 1,000th career point in the third period Saturday night as Wofford fell to East Tennessee State University 70-54 in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
With 1:47 to go in the third period and Wofford (5-10, 0-2 SoCon) trailing ETSU (9-8, 1-1 SoCon) 52-30, Frazier stole the ball from ETSU guard Mendy McNeese and converted the fast break layup to notch her 1,000th point. She became the 13th Terrier in program history to achieve the career milestone.
Â
Frazier would finish the game with 13 points on 6-12 shooting to go with three steals and one rebound.
Â
"Jordan has been a cornerstone of our program since she has been here," Head Coach
Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said after the game. "She has put in a very strong four years. This is a great honor and achievement for her. She has earned it and worked hard, so it is exciting to see her achieve this milestone, and hopefully she has many more points to put in the basket."
Â
Needing nine points entering the night to net 1,000 points in a career, Frazier started the game scoring Wofford's first seven points of the game. ETSU started the game on a 12-2 run over the first four minutes, and used their early lead to their advantage the rest of the way.
Â
The Terriers would cut ETSU's lead to as few as seven points in the first period after guard
Sarah Traynor was fouled and made one of two free throws to make it 18-11 with 2:19 in the first. ETSU scored the next four points of the game before Terrier guard
Ashton Fleming scored the next four Terrier points to make it 22-15 ETSU after the first period.
Â
The Bucs lead grew to as high as 26 points late in the fourth period. ETSU out shot Wofford over the course of the game, making 35.6 percent (21-59) of their shots compared to Wofford's 29.5 percent shooting (18-61), their second time being held to under 30 percent shooting this season.
Â
"We just have to knock down a few more shots early in the game and not get behind the eight-ball," Coach Farmer said. "We got down a little bit and shots we normally hit did not go in. We'll watch the film and we'll make the corrections. We'll be ready when we play next week against Furman."
Â
Traynor set a new career-high with 13 points to go with four steals and two rebounds. She was 3-5 from the floor, 2-4 from three and 5-6 at the line, all season-highs as well. Fleming led the Terriers with a season-high 12 rebounds to go with six points, one block and one assist.
Â
Bucs sophomore guard Tianna Tarter led the charge offensively for the visitors with a game-high 20 points to go with four rebounds, three steals and an assist. Guard Shamauria Bridges also scored in double-figures notching 12 points, while forwards Yamile Rodriguez and Shomari Kendrick each had a team-high seven rebounds.
Â
Wofford in the game was outrebounded by ETSU 47-43 and committed 22 turnovers compared to ETSU's 18. Wofford's bench contributed 28 points compared to ETSU's 23 bench points, but the Bucs scored 24 points off turnovers compared to the Terriers' 13 points. The Bucs also had 18 second-chance points versus Wofford's six.
Â
The loss gives Wofford a two-game losing streak to start Southern Conference play. The Terriers will look to turn it around against Furman next Saturday in Benjamin Johnson Arena. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
