SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team rebounded from Friday's 3-0 home loss to ETSU with a 3-1 win over Samford on Saturday afternoon in Wofford's Benjamin Johnson Arena. With the win, the Terriers improve to 12-10 on the season and 5-3 in Southern Conference action, while Samford falls to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
The Terriers took a 2-0 lead into the break after taking both the first and second sets by a score of 25-19. Samford rallied to take the third set 25-15, forcing a fourth set. In the third set the Bulldogs hit .440 as a team while holding the Terriers to -.040, which proved to be the difference. The fourth set was back and forth throughout with 14 ties and eight lead changes. Ultimately, both teams would swap set points until the Terriers put it away 28-26 to clinch the match.
Wofford had three players with double digit kills to help even out the offensive production as sophomore
Colleen Reilly led the way with 15 kills. The native of Chicago, Ill. hit .478 on the night and also tallied four block assists.
Catie Cronister added 12 kills and eight digs while
Kara Shacklette finished with 10 assists (.368) and four block assists. Freshmen
Lorissa King and
M.E. Eberhardt continued to pace the offense as the setters finished with 29 and 14 assists, respectively. Freshman libero
Madeline Savage had 14 digs while sophomore
Bijonae Jones tacked on 10 of her own.
Statistically, the teams were very evenly matched. Wofford hit .209 in the match while Samford hit .210. Both teams earned eight blocks. Samford had four players with double digit kills and two players with double digit kills.
The Terriers, continuing to battle for the top spot in the conference, return to action Wednesday, Oct. 19 against Furman. The game will be the last of three consecutive home games for Wofford as the team will head to face UNCG Oct. 22. Wednesday's match will be Wofford's breast cancer awareness match and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
