CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team fell, 2-1, in double overtime to Western Carolina in the 1
st round of the Southern Conference tournament Wednesday night in Cullowhee.

The Catamounts scored midway through the first half, but the Terriers answered late in the period on
Catie Slater's second goal of the season. Wofford kept the game tied at one into the second overtime period, but Western Carolina scored in the final minute on a header off a long throw in to earn the win and advance to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament.

The first half was evenly played, as Western Carolina got on the board in the 24
th minute on Sayres McKenna's seventh goal of the season. However, the Terriers responded less than 10 minutes later, when Slater's shot from distance found the top right corner of the net to tie the score headed into halftime.

For Slater, it was her second goal of the season. Terrier goalkeeper
Alex King was also strong in the opening period, as she recorded five saves.

The Terriers continued their strong defense in the second half, keeping the Catamounts off the board with help from King, who made multiple diving saves in the period.

It looked like the game was headed for penalty kicks, but the Western Carolina's Emma Haywood was able to head in a long throw by Sheridan Caudle in the final minute of overtime number two to give the Catamounts the victory.

Western Carolina outshot the Terriers, 18-7. However, King was up to the task, delivering a career high nine saves in the contest.

The loss marks the end of the Terriers' 2016 season, while the Catamounts will advance to the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament.
