Women's Soccer Falls to The Citadel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to The Citadel on Thursday night at Snyder Field.

The Bulldogs converted the lone goal of the game in the 11th minute, on a breakaway by Samara Nche.

The rest of the way, The Terriers were able to create a few good chances, but none found the back of the net.

After the Terriers put the first two shots of the game on the board, the Bulldogs recaptured the momentum with Nche's breakaway goal. On the play, Nche received a pass up the left sideline form Katherine Arroyo, evaded a Wofford defender, and beat the goalkeeper low and to the right to open the scoring. For Nche, it was her third goal of the season.

Despite being down a goal at the half, the Terriers outshot the Bulldogs, 6-5, while goalkeeper Mayson Liner registered two saves.

In the final period, Wofford created a few good chances to tie the game. First, freshman MaeKenzie Poplin's shot from outside the box sailed inches over the crossbar. Then, in the final minute, a free kick from Emma Fletcher from about 35 yards drifted just wide and The Citadel was able to run out the clock.

Offensively, Elise Fennegan led the Terriers with four shot attempts, with Fletcher adding three of her own. Liner was strong once again in goal, registering five saves in the loss.

Up next, Wofford will stay home, as they take on Mercer this Sunday, Oct. 9. at 2 p.m. The Terrier seniors will be honored before the game.
