SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A layup in the game's final seconds by
Marissa Bayer gave the Wofford women's basketball team a 66-65 victory over South Carolina State on Saturday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
After the Bulldogs' Brittany Drumgoole hit a go-ahead three pointer with eleven seconds to go, Bayer found herself wide open underneath the basket and finished the game winner to give the Terriers their second straight win.
Â
"Coach always tells us, just go out there and make a play," Bayer said after the game. "Maria found me with a great pass and I just made the layup."
Â
Aside from the game winner, Bayer was a consistent contributor throughout the game. Her 23 points and nine rebounds were both career highs for the sophomore forward.
Â
"What a game for Marissa," head coach
Jimmy Garrity said. "She was big time. On that last play, you have got to finish that at the end, which is not the easiest thing to do, and she did."
Â
Despite struggling from the field in the first half, Wofford was able to go into halftime with a 35-27 lead. However, South Carolina State outscored the Terriers, 25-11, in the third quarter behind 19 points from guard Bryeasha Blair. Blair finished with a game high 28 points on 12 of 26 from the floor.
Â
In the fourth quarter, Wofford was able to erase a six point deficit. The team shot 64.3% (9-14) in the final period and outscored the Bulldogs, 20-13 to earn the victory. Bayer tallied 12 of her 23 points in the final 10 minutes.
Â
"I was really proud of our team," Garrity said. "I was impressed at how much grit we showed, fighting back in the fourth quarter."
Â
Kentra Washington registered her first double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Chloe Wanink scored 15 points, with three made 3 pointers. The sophomore guard is the only Terrier that has scored in double figures in all three games this season.
Maria Corella added a career high with seven assists, including the game winner, where she found Bayer.
Â
With the win, the Terriers now have a four game winning streak in Benjamin Johnson Arena. They have not had a five game home winning streak since the 2006-07 season.
Â
Up next, the Terriers will conclude their three game home stand next Tuesday, Nov. 22 against Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m.
