SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind strong performances from its four starting seniors, the Wofford women's basketball team defeated Gardner-Webb, 75-66, on Tuesday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
The win is the Terriers third straight overall and their fifth straight at home, dating back to last season.
Â
"We're playing for each other," head coach
Jimmy Garrity said. "Right now, we are such a together team. They believe they're going to win."
Â
Wofford established a balanced scoring attack, as four players scored in double figures. The team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, leading after every quarter. The defense was superb, with the Terriers holding Gardner-Webb to 41.5% shooting for the game and just 26% in the first half.
Â
"We really focused in practice, defending their ball screens," Wofford guard
Sarah Traynor said. "We wanted to make sure they couldn't get the shots off that they usually do."
Â
Seniors
Maria Corella and
Kentra Washington led the way for the Terriers, as both tallied 15 points. For Corella, she notched a season high in points and made three pointers (3).
Â
Fellow seniors
Grayson Pinholster and
Sarah Traynor also had outstanding nights for the Terriers. Pinholster established season highs, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also notched her first double-double of the season. Traynor delivered 11 points and made all six of her free throw attempts. The senior point guard also tallied six assists for the third consecutive game.
Â
Against a physical Gardner-Webb team, the Terriers outrebounded the Runnin Bulldogs, 40-32. Wofford also held an 18-2 advantage in second chance points and outscored Gardner-Webb 40-26 in the paint.
"Second chance points were absolutely huge tonight" Garrity said. "They're a big, physical, strong team, so our rebounding advantage helped us win the game."
Â
Wofford took a 51-43 lead into the fourth quarter. However, the Runnin Bulldogs made a desperate final push to get back in the game. The Terriers answered the call in the fourth, knocking down all nine of their free throw attempts in the period. The team's 84.6% (11-13) from the line is the team's best percentage this season.
Â
Up next, the Terriers will travel to Nebraska-Omaha and play Sunday, Nov. 27, at 1:00 p.m. They will be looking for their first four game winning streak since 2012-13.
