FT. MYERS, Fla. – For the second time in as many days, the game came down to the wire for Wofford men's basketball, but the Terriers fell 70-62 to Bradley on Tuesday morning in the team's third game of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Wofford moves to 1-3 on the season and Bradley improves to 3-2 on the year.
Fletcher Magee was Wofford's leading scorer with 15 points as the sophomore went 5-11 from the field and 3-7 from three point range.
Eric Garcia finished with 12 points and five assists.
Ryan Sawvell scored 10 points and brought down nine rebounds, one shy of a double-double, in 26 minutes of action.
Matthew Pegram came off the bench to score eight points, tying his career high.
Wofford got on the board quick thanks to a layup by
Fletcher Magee off a pass from
Eric Garcia just 11 seconds into the game. At the first media, Wofford had a 9-2 lead with baskets coming from four different Terriers and Bradley's lone two points coming off of free throws. Bradley wouldn't score again until 12:56 left in the half. The Terriers wouldn't trail the entire half and took a 36-25 lead into the locker room. At the half, Sawvell and Garcia led all players with 8 points.
A big difference in the first half came from Wofford's efficiency at the free throw line and contribution beyond the arc. Wofford was a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe while Bradley shot just 53% from the line and the Terriers shot 37.5% from three point range and held the Braves to just 14.3%.
Out of the half, Bradley began to claw themselves back into the game, going on an 11-6 run to cut Wofford's lead to 42-38. The teams would swap baskets and Wofford would hold its lead until 9:35 left in the game when Bradley took its first lead at 52-51. With five minutes to go, the game was tied 57-57 but Bradley went on a 13-5 run to close out the game. The Braves outscored Wofford 45-26 in the second half of play.
Bradley scored 90 points in a loss to Hofstra on Monday, so the Terriers held them to 20 less points. Bradley freshman Darrell Brown scored a freshman record 34 in the loss, while Wofford held Brown to just 11 points in Tuesday's game.
Wofford will play Kent State on Wednesday at 11 AM. The game, the third in three days for Wofford, will be the final game of the tournament for the Terriers.
Notes:
- This was the third meeting between Wofford and Bradley with all three games being played on November 22. The last meeting was Nov. 22, 2011 and Wofford won 70-66. Bradley won the Nov. 22, 2009 matchup 56-54.
- Wofford went with the same starting five for the fourth game this season.
