Wanink leads Women's Basketball Past UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Behind an outstanding performance from Chloe Wanink, Wofford took down UNC Wilmington, 71-67, on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.

Wanink scored a career high 26 points and tied her career high with 10 rebounds. The sophomore guard scored all 26 of her points in the first three quarters. Then, in the fourth, the rest of the Terriers took control, led by six points each from Kentra Washington and Marissa Bayer.

"This was a great college basketball game," head coach Jimmy Garrity said. "I'm really proud of how well the team played together. Even when we made mistakes, we moved on to the next play."

Wanink's 26 points and 10 rebounds give her two double-doubles on the season. The sophomore from Cameron, Wis. made a career best four threes on just six attempts. She was joined in double figures by senior forward Kentra Washington and sophomore forward Marissa Bayer. Washington scored six points in the fourth quarter and also added eight rebounds and a career high six assists for the game. Bayer scored six of her 10 points in the fourth on four of six shooting.

"This team really wants to win," Wanink said. "We're going hard in practice every day and trying to have the right mindset for each game."

In the first quarter, Wanink led all scorers with 14 points, including two three pointers. The sophomore guard scored 14 of the Terriers' 18 points in the period and kept the team within striking distance after one.

Wofford tightened up its defense in the second quarter, holding the Seahawks to just nine points on 33% shooting in the quarter. Despite being outshot in the first half, the Terriers took a two point halftime lead due to 11 forced turnovers and eight second chance points. Wanink led all players in the first half, with 16 points and eight rebounds, four of which were offensive.

The game remained evenly played in the third quarter, with the Terriers lengthening their lead to three points heading into the final period. Wanink added 10 more points in the quarter, setting her career high with over 10 minutes left to play.

In the fourth, the Terriers withstood numerous rallies from the Seahawks. The team responded by making five of its last seven field goals and seven of eight free throws in the final period to close out the win. Wofford held a 16-4 advantage in the assists category and forced 16 UNCW turnovers.

With the win, Wofford is now 6-4 on the season. This is the first time the team has been over .500 through ten games since the 2011-12 season.

Up next, the Terriers will travel to Charleston Southern on Monday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
