CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team used an outstanding defensive and rebounding effort to pull away from Charleston Southern, 59-45, on Monday night in North Charleston.
Â
Despite trailing by 11 in the first quarter, the Terriers battled back to tie the game at the half and took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bucs, 22-12, in the final 10 minutes.
Â
"At halftime, we regrouped and we came out and played the way I know we can play," head coach
Jimmy Garrity said. "We got stops when we needed to and we took care of the ball better."
Â
For the second straight game, sophomore guard
Chloe Wanink topped 20 points, this time going for 21 on 8 of 13 from the floor. She also hit four three pointers, tying the career high that she set in her last outing at UNC Wilmington (Dec. 17). Her back to back 20 point games are the first time a Terrier has accomplished the feat since Kentra Washiington last season.
Â
Senior forward
Grayson Pinholster helped Wofford dominate the rebounding battle, as she pulled down 14 boards to go along with eight points. Her 14 rebounds ties a career high that she set earlier this season in a road win at N.C. Central (Dec. 3)
Â
Despite making just two field goals in the first quarter, the Terriers held the Bucs to just 33% shooting to keep their first quarter deficit within single digits.
Â
Wofford tightened up its defense even more in the second quarter, holding Charleston Southern to just five points, the fewest they have allowed in a quarter all season. Meanwhile, the Terriers benefitted from two
Chloe Wanink three's in the opening two minutes of the period.
Grayson Pinholster's last second jumper tied the score at 19 going into the half.
Â
In the opening 20 minutes, the Terriers owned the glass, outrebounding the Bucs, 26-17. Charleston Southern's Breannah Bretches led all first half scorers with 10 points.
Â
The Terriers took their first lead of the night in the third quarter. They outscored the Bucs, 18-14 in the period to take a four point lead into the final 10 minutes.
Â
Then, in the fourth, they remained aggressive, earning 20 free throw attempts, while holding the Bucs to 5 of 19 shooting. Point guard
Sarah Traynor knocked in five of her season best six free throws in the final period.
Â
Despite shooting just 33.9% from the floor and 55.6% from the free throw line, the Terriers grabbed a season high 53 rebounds, compared to just 34 for Charleston Southern, to earn their second straight road win. The Terriers also registered a season high 20 offensive rebound for the game. Â
Â
"I'm really happy with the rebounding," Garrity said. "I believe that was the difference in the game."
Â
With the win, it gives the team their first two game road winning streak since the 2011-12 season.
Â
The Terriers have made a habit of closing strong. This season, they have outscored their opponents, 208-169, in the fourth quarter.
Â
Up next, Wofford will remain on the road, as they travel to Florida to take on North Florida on December 30 at 3 p.m., before taking on Jacksonville on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m.
