Baseball Downs George Mason 11-6

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team jumped out to an early lead on the way to an 11-6 win over George Mason on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored five runs in the first inning and took an 8-0 lead into the sixth inning. George Mason scored five runs in the final two innings, but could not make up the deficit.
 
Wofford opens at 3-0 for the third time in the last four seasons. George Mason falls to 0-3 after the first weekend of play. The Terriers were led by Kody Ruedisili and McClain Bradley with three hits each, while Demetrius Jennings drove in three runs. Starting pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan went 5.2 innings with one run allowed and eight strikeouts. The Patriots were led by Kent Blackstone with two hits and four RBIs.
 
In the first inning, the Patriots left one runner on base after a single. The Terriers had a pair of runners on base after a walk and fielder's choice when a bunt was misplayed and a run scored. A walk then loaded the bases. Cody Miller was hit by a pitch to plate one run, while a single by McClain Bradley made it a 3-0 game. With two outs, an infield single by Demetrius Jennings added a run and the bases remained loaded. Alec Paradowski walked to bring in a run for a 5-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
 
Both teams left one runner on base in the second inning. After George Mason left one runner on in the top of the third, McClain Bradley walked to lead off the bottom of the third. With one out, Demetrius Jennings cleared the fence in left center to make it a 7-0 game. It was his first career home run. The Terriers added two more hits in the inning, but were unable to build on the lead.
 
George Mason was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. Singles by Carson Waln, Cody Miller and McClain Bradley loaded the bases for Wofford in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Alex Malsch plated a run for an 8-0 lead, but the Terriers left the bases loaded to end the inning.
 
The Patriots were retired in order in the top of the fifth and Wofford stranded two runners in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, Kent Blackstone hit an RBI double to make it an 8-1 game. Wofford left one runner on base to end the sixth inning and George Mason was retired in order in the top of the seventh.
 
To lead off the bottom of the seventh, Kody Ruedisili hit a double to the left field corner. Brett Hash added a single and a sacrifice fly by Carson Waln plated Ruedisili. With two outs, a double to center field by McClain Bradley scored Hash to make it a 10-1 score. A single by Alex Malsch enabled Bradley to score for an 11-1 lead at the completion of seven innings.
 
In the top of the eighth inning, George Mason loaded the bases with a walk and two hit by pitch. With two outs, a walk plated a run to make it 11-2 in the middle of the eighth. After the Terriers left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots began the ninth inning with back-to-back walks. With one out, a sacrifice fly plated a run. Kent Blackstone then cleared the fence in left center to drive in three runs to make it an 11-6 score before a fly ball ended the game.
 
Wofford pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan (1-0) went 5.2 innings in his first career start. He allowed one run on five hits and had a career-high eight strikeouts with just one walk. Elliot Lance struck out the lone batter he faced. Quintin Pile retired the side in order in the seventh inning. Connor Foltyn, Merritt Huber, Will Fuqua, Grant Byers, Josh Simpson and Jordan Accetta combined to go the final two innings.
 
Bryce Nightengale (0-1) started for the Patriots and threw 2.1 innings with seven runs allowed on three hits, along with a pair of strikeouts. Mark Maksimow went 1.2 innings and gave up one run on five hits. Tim Quinn worked two innings and did not allow a run on one hit. Saul Aguilera added two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on four hits. Matthew Yost recorded one out, while Zach Mort went the final inning allowing just one hit.
 
The Terriers will host USC Upstate on Wednesday 5:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
