WBB: Terriers Downed by Mocs on the Road

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford College women's basketball team got off to a slow start offensively as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs defeated Wofford 65-48 Saturday afternoon at McKenzie Arena.

The Terriers (7-16, 1-8 SoCon) fell behind 20-9 after the first period to start the game. The Mocs (16-7, 7-2 SoCon) only outscored the Terriers by two points in each period the rest of the way, but their ten minutes gave them enough of an advantage to take the game.

Wofford looked poised to make a run late in the game, scoring four straight points to make it 58-47 with 4:14 left in the game after guard Ashton Fleming made a tough layup. Mocs guard Aryanna Gilbert drained the Mocs' eighth three pointer of the game on their next possession however, and the Terriers were held to one point the rest of the way.

Forward Kentra Washington tied for a game high with 18 points, her fifth straight game scoring in double figures. She also gathered six rebounds to go with two assists and two blocks while going 8-11 from the free throw line. Over her last five games, she has averaged 20.2 points per game.

Forward Grayson Pinholster led the Terriers on the boards with seven rebounds to go with seven points, an assist and a block on 3-5 shooting.

The Mocs outrebounded Wofford 37-31 in the game while shooting 43.1 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent (8-15) from three-point range. The Terriers were held to 34 percent shooting and 30 percent (3-10) from deep. The Mocs also set season-highs in blocks and steals (14 each).

Guard Queen Alford led Chattanooga offensively with 18 points on 6-15 shooting, including 3-5 from three. Guards Keiana and Aryanna Gilbert each finished with 13 points and forward Sydney Vanlandingham contributed 10 points as well.

Wofford did have more contribution from their bench than Chattanooga, with the Terriers' bench scoring 13 points compared to the Mocs' 10. Chattanooga outscored Wofford in the paint 34-24 and had 15 points off 16 Terrier turnovers, while Wofford had 13 points of 11 Moc turnovers.

The loss puts the Terriers on a five-game losing streak. The Terriers will have a week to prepare for their next game, as Wofford travels to SoCon-rival Furman next Saturday with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
