Baseball Wins 8-4 At Presbyterian College

CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team picked up an 8-4 win over Presbyterian College on Wednesday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. The Terriers opened the game with a lead-off home run by Alec Paradowski and added a three-run home run by Brett Hash in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Wofford plated three more runs in the top of the eighth before the Blue Hose added two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Wofford is 12-6 on the season, while Presbyterian is 10-6 overall. The teams will meet again on March 29 in Spartanburg. The Terriers were led by Alec Paradowski, Max McDougald and McClain Bradley with two hits each, while Brett Hash drove in three runs. The Blue Hose had two hits from Tyler Weyenberg to lead the squad.
 
Alec Paradowski opened the game with a solo home run on a 3-1 count that went over the fence in right field. It was his second home run of the season. Wofford had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning after the Blue Hose stranded one runner.
 
Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second inning and Presbyterian opened their half of the second with back-to-back walks and a single to load the bases. A walk brought in a run to tie the game and a sacrifice fly with one out gave the Blue Hose a 2-1 lead. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the third inning.
 
With runners on the corners and two out, Elliot Lance picked off the Blue Hose runner on first to end the third inning. Max McDougald led off the top of the fourth with a single up the middle, but a double play and strikeout ended the Wofford half. Presbyterian added two singles in the bottom of the fourth and both runners were stranded after a strikeout.
 
The fifth inning began with a triple to right center by McClain Bradley. An infield single by Cody Miller scored Bradley to tie the game at 2-2 and Wofford left one runner on base to end the top half. The Blue Hose were retired in order to end the fifth inning and Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch to open the sixth inning. Carson Waln was hit by a pitch with one out and then Brett Hash cleared the fence to the left of the scoreboard in left field to make it a 5-2 game. It was the second home run of the season for Hash. Presbyterian was retired in order to end the sixth inning.
 
In the top of the seventh, Wofford was retired in order on three ground balls. The Blue Hose had a double with two outs, but the runner was stranded. Alec Paradowski led off the eighth inning with a double to right field and a bunt single, plus an error, by Max McDougald drove in Paradowski for a 6-2 lead. A walk to Brett Hash and a single by McClain Bradley loaded the bases with one out. A walk to Ty Reginelli plated a run for a 7-2 score. The Terriers added one more run on a ball put in play by Chandler Engel to make it 8-2 in the middle of the eighth inning.
 
The Blue Hose added a single in the bottom of the eight, but stranded the runner. Trace Witt reached on an error in the top of the ninth with two outs before a ground ball ended the top half. Presbyterian had runners on the corners with one out after a walk and error. A single plated a run and a sacrifice fly made it 8-4 before a fly ball ended the game. 
 
Wofford pitcher Austin Higginbotham worked 2.2 innings in his third start of the season. He allowed two runs on one hit and walked six batters. Elliot Lance (3-0) went a career-high 6.1 innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
 
David Sauer (2-1) started for the Blue Hose and went six innings with five runs allowed on five hits, along with four strikeouts. Russell Thompson retired all three batters he faced in an inning. Hunter Kyzar gave up one hit and a run. Aaron Lesiak threw a third of an inning and allowed two runs on a pair of hits.  Michael Trebendis added two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit. Hayden Deal struck out one batter in the ninth.
 
The game was the first road win of the season for the Terriers. It also marked the 205th career win at Wofford for head coach Todd Interdonato. He is now the winningest baseball coach at Wofford, passing Mark Line (204 wins, 1986-1995).
 
Wofford will have a road-home-road weekend series against Gardner-Webb beginning on Friday night in Boiling Springs, N.C. at 6:00 p.m. The teams will play Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Wofford and again on Sunday at Gardner-Webb.
