Baseball Wins 6-5 Over Ohio In 11

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team defeated Ohio University 6-5 in eleven innings at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eleventh inning, Mack Nathanson scored on a wild pitch to give the Terriers the 6-5 victory.  
 
Wofford is 10-3 on the season, while Ohio University is 4-7 overall. The Terriers won three of the four games against Ohio, the 2015 MAC Champions, over the weekend. Despite being outhit 15 to 8 in the contest, Wofford took advantage of eight walks issued by the Bobcats and scored twice on wild pitches. Wofford was led by Kody Ruedisili with two hits, including a double, and Alec Paradowski with two RBIs. The Bobcats were led by Mitch Longo with four hits. It was the first extra inning game of the season for Wofford.
 
To lead off the game, Manny De Jesus singled for the Bobcats but he was stranded at second base. After Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the first, Mitch Longo doubled to begin the second inning. With runners on the corners and one out, the runner at first was caught stealing. Tony Giannini reached on a single to score Longo for a 1-0 advantage.
 
With one out in the bottom of the second, Cody Miller walked and Kody Ruedisili added a double. A single through the right side by McClain Bradley drove in Miller to tie the game at 1-1. Chandler Engel's first career hit was an RBI single through the right side to give Wofford a 2-1 lead. After a wild pitch scored Bradley, Alec Paradowski had an RBI single to push the score to 4-1 at the end of the second inning.
 
A double play ended the top of the third for the Bobcats and Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the third. John Adryan opened the fourth inning with a solo home run to cut the score to 4-2. The Bobcats left one runner on base to end the top half. The Terriers opened the bottom of the fourth with a single by Kody Ruedisili but three straight strikeouts ended the inning.
 
The Bobcats had two outs in the top of the fifth when runners reached on a hit by pitch and walk. A strikeout looking ended the half for Ohio. Alec Paradowski walked to lead off the Wofford half of the fifth. After a fielder's choice and another walk, a strikeout ended the inning with two runners stranded.
 
Mitch Longo led off the top of the sixth with a double for the Bobcats. A single and advance on a throw gave Ohio runners in scoring position. A fielder's choice had the lead runner out at home plate. A single to left field drove in a run to make it a 4-3 contest. With runners on second and third with two out, a single through the right side by Manny De Jesus plated both runners to give the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.
 
Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Bobcats added a single and a walk. A strikeout sent the game to the seventh inning stretch. Derek Hirsch led off the bottom half with a walk, but three straight fly balls ended the inning.
 
Ohio opened the eighth inning with a single, but the runner was stranded on second base. Brett Hash started the Wofford half of the eighth with a walk, but was unable to advance. With one out in the top of the ninth, the Bobcats added a pair of singles. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the top half for Ohio. Chandler Engel walked to start the bottom of the ninth for the Terriers. Alex Malsch entered as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Alec Paradowski drove in Malsch to tie the game at 5-5 before fly ball sent the contest to extra innings.
 
In the top of the tenth, the Bobcats had a single with one out. The runner moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt, but a fly ball ended the top half. Carson Waln led off the bottom of the tenth with a single, but was caught stealing second. With two outs, Cody Miller doubled down the right line and then Kody Ruedisili was intentionally walked. A deep fly ball by McClain Bradley was caught to end the tenth with two runners stranded. Will Stillman struck out the Bobcats side of the eleventh inning in order. Mack Nathanson led off the bottom of the eleventh with a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Alec Paradowski was intentionally walked, which was followed by an infield fly. Carson Waln was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. A wild pitch on a 1-2 count to Brett Hash allowed Nathanson to score the winning run.  
 
Wofford pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan went five and a third innings with five runs allowed on eight hits. He struck out four batters and issued a pair of walks. Jordan Accetta worked 2.2 innings without allowing a run on three hits and four strikeouts. Will Stillman (1-0) gave up three hits and struck out a career-high seven batters in three innings for the win.  
 
Jake Rudnicki started for Ohio and threw five innings with four runs allowed on five hits, along with seven strikeouts. Eddie Fitzpatrick went four innings and gave up one run and had three strikeouts. Cory Blessing worked an inning with two hits allowed. Tom Colletti (0-1) threw the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on one hit.
 
Wofford will travel to South Carolina on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. contest before returning home for a three-game weekend series against Cornell.
