Baseball Drops 7-1 Decision at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 7-1 by South Carolina on Tuesday evening at Founders Park. With the game tied at one in the middle of the third inning, the Gamecocks plated three runs in the bottom of the third and held the Terriers scoreless for the final six innings.
 
Wofford is 10-4 on the season, while #16 South Carolina is 11-2 overall. The Terriers were led by Derek Hirsch with a pair of hits and an RBI. The South Carolina pitching staff combined for 16 strikeouts in the game and issued two walks. Dom Thompson-Williams led the Gamecocks with three hits and three RBIs in the contest.
 
Max McDougald had the first hit of the game for the Terriers, but a double play ended the top of the first inning. The Gamecocks had back-to-back singles with one out. An infield single by Dom Thompson-Williams with two outs scored the first run of the game. South Carolina left the bases loaded at the end of the first, but had a 1-0 advantage.
 
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the second inning and the Gamecocks stranded one in their half of the second. McClain Bradley led off the top of the third with a double to the left corner. With one out, Derek Hirsch singled through the left side to score Bradley and tie the game at 1-1. A double play ended the top of the third with one Terrier stranded. The Gamecocks had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the third. A single by L.T. Tolbert drove in a pair of run and an error allowed an additional run to score for a 4-1 lead.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. After Wofford was retired in order to begin the fifth inning, the Gamecocks led off with a walk and a single for runners on the corners. An RBI single by Chris Cullen pushed the score to 5-1, but South Carolina left a pair of runners on base at the end of the fifth inning. The Terriers went down in order in the top of the sixth. South Carolina led off with a single and with one out a 9-3 double play ended the sixth inning.
 
Carson Waln began the seventh inning with a single and with two outs Mack Nathanson added a single, but both runners were stranded. The Gamecocks added a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh by Dom Thompson-Williams to push the lead to 7-1.
 
In the top of the eighth, Derek Hirsch had his second single of the day but was unable to advance from first base. The Gamecocks had a single in the bottom of the eighth. The Terriers had two runners reach on walks in the top of the ninth, but were left on base to end the game.
 
Wofford pitcher Austin Higginbotham started and went three innings. He allowed four runs, one of which was unearned, on six hits and four walks. Elliot Lance threw three innings with three runs allowed on five hits. Spencer Kulman allowed one hit in an inning. Will Fuqua allowed one hit and had a strikeout in the eighth inning.
 
Adam Hill started for South Carolina and worked three innings with one run allowed on three hits, along with five strikeouts. Tyler Johnson went four innings and allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts. Brandon Murray added an inning with two strikeouts and one hit allowed. Matt Vogel pitched the ninth and struck out three batters with two walks.
 
Wofford returns home for a three-game weekend series against Cornell. The Terriers will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at noon against the Big Red.
