Baseball Drops 4-0 Decision At Baylor

WACO, Texas – On Wednesday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 4-0 by Baylor at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears scored three runs in the second inning and added one in the fifth. The Terriers loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to score.
 
Wofford is 16-15 overall and Baylor is 15-14 overall. Both teams had seven hits in the contest. Baylor stranded 12 runners, while Wofford left ten on base. The Terriers were led by Dylan May with a 3-for-3 performance, while Derek Hirsch added two hits. Justin Arrington and Richard Cunningham each had two hits for the Bears.
 
The Terriers had two reach base on walks in the top of the first, but a caught stealing ended the Wofford half. The Bears opened with back-to-back singles. Three straight outs ended the first inning with both runners stranded. With two outs in the top of the second, Dylan May singled through the left side before a ground out ended the top half. Baylor began their half of the second with back-to-back walks. An error fielding a sacrifice bunt allowed a run to score. An RBI single and a ground out made it 3-0 at the end of the second inning.
 
In the top of the third with two outs, Derek Hirsch had a bunt single but was caught stealing second. The Bears were retired in order in the bottom of the third inning and Wofford left one on base in the top of the fourth. After Baylor was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth, Dylan May led off the fifth with a single. He was stranded at second to end the Wofford half of the fifth.
 
The Bears had a bunt single with one out in the bottom of the fifth to end a stretch of ten straight batters retired. The runner was on third with two outs when an RBI single gave Baylor a 4-0 lead. Wofford went down in order in the top of the sixth inning. Baylor had two runners on base after a walk and a single in the bottom of the sixth. A caught stealing for the second out was followed by a Wofford error to put runners on the corners. The bases were loaded after a walk, but a fly ball ended the scoring chance.
 
Brett Hash led off the seventh inning with a single through the left side and Cody Miller followed with a walk. A single by Dylan May loaded the bases. A shallow fly ball, strikeout and ground out left all three runners stranded as the game went to the seventh inning stretch. The Bears had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after three walks, but the inning ended with a fly ball.
 
The Terriers opened the eighth with a bunt single by Derek Hirsch and a single by McClain Bradley. With one out, a walk to Brett Hash loaded the bases. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the top of the eighth inning with three runners stranded. Baylor left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, Wofford was retired in order in the ninth to end the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Quintin Pile (0-1) went 1.1 innings with three runs allowed on three hits. Jordan Accetta worked 3.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits. Grant Byers gave up one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Will Fuqua and Chris Sheehan each added two-thirds of an inning on the mound without allowing a hit. Merritt Huber threw the eighth inning and did not allow a hit.
 
Andrew McInvale (2-1) started for Baylor and went six innings without allowing a run on three hits, along with five strikeouts. Kody Hessemer threw an inning and gave up two hits. Joe Heineman added an inning with two hits allowed and three strikeouts. Troy Montemayor retired the side in order in the ninth with two strikeouts.
 
The game was a homecoming for six Wofford players who are from Texas – John Caskey, Connor Foltyn, Dylan May, Matt Milburn, Alec Paradowski, and Quintin Pile. It marks just the second time Wofford has traveled to Texas for a series, as the Terriers faced Texas Tech in 2003. Wofford alum Fisher DeBerry's grandson, Joe Sabatini, plays for Baylor. The Terriers are now 1-4 this season against schools from a Power Five conference.
 
Wofford continues the six-game road trip with a visit to Samford for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night and a midweek game at Winthrop before returning home.
