CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team roared back from a two goal deficit to defeat Presbyterian in the second overtime period, 3-2 at Martin Stadium.
After falling behind 2-0 early in the second half, the Terriers responded with two quick goals to tie the game and force overtime.
Then, in the second minute of the second overtime, senior forward
Nicky Watson received a pass from
Kevin Davidsson and finished low to the right, past the keeper to net the game winner.
For Wofford, it marks the second time in the last two seasons in which they have come from at least two goals down in the second half to win. They also accomplished the feat on Sept. 29 of last season against ETSU.
The teams battled through a scoreless, evenly played first half. Wofford and PC each totaled seven shots, three shots on goal, and two corner kicks in the opening forty five minutes.
In the second half, the game began to open up, as the Blue Hose scored the first goal of the game in the 51
st minute on a low cross that was finished by Sergio Pinto. Then, three minutes later, Presbyterian scored again to take a 2-0 lead.
However, Wofford quickly responded when
Chris Welsh drew a penalty in the box and finished the penalty kick to close the gap to 2-1. For Welsh, it was his first goal as a Terrier.
With under 15 minutes to play, senior
Charlie Heffron slipped behind the PC defense and finished in the top of the net to tie the game.
The Terriers threatened late in the second half, but the Blue Hose held steady to force overtime. The first OT was scoreless, but just two minutes into the second, Watson netted the game winner to start Wofford 1-0 on the season.
Up next, the Terriers will open up its home schedule against Davidson on Monday, Aug. 29 at 7 P.M.
