SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team defeated Davidson, 2-0, in its home opener Monday night at Snyder Field.
The Terriers scored once in each half and their defense held the Wildcats to just eight shot attempts in the shutout.
After the 2-0 start to the season, Coach Polson was pleased with his team's effort. "It's nice, starting the home season with a win and a shutout on top of that. We beat a good Davidson team tonight," Polson said. "It's great to be 2-0 heading into the weekend."
Andreas Suri highlighted a team effort from Wofford, as he recorded an assist and added a goal in the second half to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Terriers did not waste much time getting on the scoreboard. In the 26
th minute, defender
Kyle Nelson's header from just in front of the net beat the keeper to the right to give Wofford an early advantage. The goal was Nelson's first of the season, matching his total from his freshman year.
After the halftime break, Wofford continued to play aggressive, as Suri was able to draw a foul just outside the box and earn a free kick from close range. Seconds later, he put the shot away in the top corner of the net to extend the Terrier lead to 2-0 with under 30 minutes to play.
For the game, Wofford outshot the Wildcats 14-8, including an 8-3 advantage in the first half.
Goalkeeper
Garrett Closs tallied four saves, delivering his first shutout of the season and the ninth of his career.
Through two games, the Terriers have established a balanced scoring attack, as their first five goals of the season have been scored by five different players.
Up next, Wofford will play two games over the weekend as host of the Southern Conference/Big South Challenge. First, on Friday, Sept. 2, they take on Gardner-Webb at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup against Winthrop at 3:30 p.m.
