SPARTANBURG, S.C – The Wofford women's soccer team used a goal in each half to defeat USC Upstate, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Snyder Field.
The win marks the second consecutive home victory for the Terriers, after their 3-1 win over Presbyterian last Friday. On the season, Wofford holds a 2-1 record at home.
It did not take long for the Terriers to establish their will, as
Hannah Washko scored for the second straight game. This time, her goal came in the 15
th minute after she took the ball off an opponent's foot and delivered a strike to the top corner of the net to give Wofford an early lead.
The first half also saw the Terriers play suffocating defense, as the Spartans did not attempt a shot or earn a corner kick in the opening period, while the Terriers attempted seven shots and earned two corners.
Once again, Wofford struck early in the second half, as sophomore forward
Catie Slater found the back of the net from in close to notch her first career goal.
From there, the Terriers watched the game clock tick down and held steady on defense to secure the 2-0 victory. USC Upstate was more aggressive in the second half, attempting seven shots. However, Wofford goalkeeper
Mayson Liner delivered her first shutout of the season, making four saves in the second half. Liner is now 2-1 on the campaign.
Overall, Wofford held a shot advantage of 17-7 and a corner kick advantage of 7-2. Tuesday night marked the second straight game in which the Terriers attempted at least 17 shots.
Despite taking the loss, Spartans goalkeeper Brooke Bailey delivered eight saves for the game.
Up next, Wofford will travel to Jacksonville to take on North Florida on Friday, Sept. 16. At 7 p.m., before battling Stetson at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
