Volleyball Downs Wake Forest 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – On the opening day of the Black and Gold Invitational, the Wofford College volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-13) win over the host Wake Forest on Friday night at the Summit School. The Terriers won the first and third sets before taking the fifth set 15-13.
 
Wofford moves to 6-5 on the season, while Wake Forest is 3-6 overall. The win was the first in school history over a team from the ACC. Lorissa King led the Terriers with a 31 assists. Catie Cronister had a team-high 18 kills and added twelve digs. Colleen Reilly had 13 kills and a .500 attack percentage. The Terriers had a .209 overall attack percentage, while the Demon Deacons were at .229 for the match. Wake Forest was led by Kylie Long with 17 kills and Bailey Shurbet with 41 assists. There were a total of 30 ties and 14 lead changes in the match.
 
In the first set, the score was tied at three and then at six before the Terriers took a 7-6 lead. A pair of service aces by Catie Cronister helped Wofford take a 9-6 advantage and the Terriers pushed the score to 12-7. Wofford had a 16-12 lead after a kill by Catie Cronister, but the Demon Deacons scored the next two points. After trading points, Wofford as able to reach a 20-16 lead. A timeout by Wake Forest was followed by back-to-back points to cut the lead to 20-18. A kill by Kelly Bossert gave Wofford possession and a 21-19 advantage and a service ace by Morgan Ballard made it 24-21. Wake Forest saved one set point before a kill by Colleen Reilly gave Wofford a 25-22 win in the first set.
 
The Terriers scored first in the second set, but it was tied at 6 and 7 before the Demon Deacons ran the lead to 11-8. Wofford responded and tied the score at 12, 13, 14, and 15. Wake Forest went on a four-point run for a 19-15 lead and forced Wofford to call a time out. The Terriers ended the run coming out of the time out with a point on a service error, however the Demon Deacons pushed the lead to 22-19. With the score 23-21 in favor of Wake Forest, two of the next four points went to the Demon Deacons for a 25-23 win.
 
The third set was tied at six when Wofford scored six of the next seven points to take a 12-7 lead and force Wake Forest to call time out. The Terriers were able to push the score to 15-10 before the Demon Deacons scored three straight points and were able to tie the set at 15. Wofford then ran off eight of the next nine points to take a 23-16 lead. Wake Forest then scored five of the next six points, but a kill by Kelly Bossert gave Wofford a 25-21 win in the set.
 
Wofford jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Demon Deacons built an 11-8 advantage. Wofford cut the lead to 12-11 before Wake Forest responded and took a 17-13 lead and the Terriers called time out. With the Demon Deacons up 21-14, Wofford called a second time out. The Terriers scored the next four points and forced a Wake Forest time out at 21-18. The Demon Deacons scored four of the final five points in the set to win 25-19.
 
In the deciding fifth set, Wofford scored first and took a 3-1 lead. Wake Forest had the advantage at 5-4 before three straight points made it 7-5 in favor of Wofford. Four straight points by the Demon Deacons gave them a 9-7 lead, but Wofford then hit three straight for a 10-9 lead. The set was then tied at 10, 11, 12, and 13. An attack error by Wake Forest gave Wofford match point and a kill by Catie Cronister from Lorissa King made it 15-13 as Wofford clinched the win.
 
The Terriers will continue play in the Black and Gold Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. At 10:30 a.m. Wofford will face Charlotte, followed by a match against High Point at 5:00 p.m.
