SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team scored twice in the first half, and added a late goal to seal a 3-1 victory against USC Upstate on Tuesday night at Snyder Field.
The game was the last of the Terriers' nonconference schedule, with the team taking a 5-2 record into the conference season.
Connor Donohue and
Sam Ross netted their first goals of the season in the first half, while
Matthew Aurednik notched his third of the season in the final minute to seal the win.
After the first ten minutes saw both teams held out of the shot category, the pace picked up considerably in the middle of the first half. The Terriers opened the scoring after goalie
Joe Wichmann's kick from goal found
Andreas Suri, who fed Donohue for a strike from the top of the box that beat the keeper. The goal was Donohue's first of the season, but also marks the third consecutive game in which he has registered a point, as he tallied an assist against Duquesne (9/9) and Bucknell (9/11)
The Spartans responded quickly, as Lukas Sommer drew a foul just inside the box to draw the team's first penalty kick of the season. USC Upstate had not registered a shot until that point, but Sommer's penalty kick beat Wichmann high to tie the score at 1 in the 23
rd minute.
Wofford answered quickly, when defender
Tanner DeFreitas played a low cross into the box that found
Sam Ross, who finished the chance to give the Terriers the lead for good. The goal was the first of Ross's career.
"To answer the goal that they scored was huge," coach Polson said. "I was really proud of how hard the guys played."
With the lead throughout the second half, the Terriers played a much more defensive game, attempting just three shots in the second half after shooting six times in the first. Then, in the final minute,
Matthew Aurednik received a ball over the top from freshman
Austin Tuggle and beat the keeper from just in front of the net to put the game out of reach for USC Upstate. It was Aurednik's third goal of the season, which ties him with
Kyle Nelson for the team lead. For Tuggle, he registered his first career point with the assist.
Senior goalkeeper
Joe Wichmann made his first start of the season and allowed only the penalty kick goal.
Up next, Wofford will begin conference play next Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., as they travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer.
