Women's Soccer Defeated by Chattanooga

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team fell to Chattanooga, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.

Despite surrendering a goal to the Mocs midway through the first half, the Terriers responded with aggressive play in the second period, resulting in the game tying goal in the 60th minute from Elise Fennegan. Unfortunately, the Mocs answered quickly, as Peyton McCollum scored the game winning goal just two minutes later.

Both teams started slow offensively, with the teams taking just four combined shots in the first half. One of those shots for Chattanooga found the back of the net, when McCollum's cross into the box found the head of Jordan Mueller, who finished past a diving Mayson Liner to put the Mocs on top early.

The Terriers defended well in the opening period, allowing Chattanooga only two more shots the rest of the period.

In the second half, Wofford went on the attack, taking five shots in their first 15 minutes of the half. Then, Emma Fletcher fed a beautiful cross to the near post that was headed in by Fennegan to tie the score at 1-1. It was Fennegan's first goal and Fletcher's first assist of the season.

Despite the momentum, the Mocs rallied for a quick goal after McCollum found the back of the net from about eight yards to give Chattanooga a lead it did not relinquish.

In the loss, the Terriers outshot Chattanooga, 13-10, including a 12-7 advantage in the second half. Goalkeepers Mayson Liner and Alex King received time for Wofford, with both recording two saves and allowing one goal.

On the offensive side, Emma Fletcher came close on two shot attempts from at least 25 yards out. On the second, with less than 10 minutes to go, it took a leaping save from Chattanooga keeper Melia Correa to keep the Mocs in front.

McCollum led all players with three points, including a first half assist and the game winning goal in the 62nd minute to give the Mocs their first conference win of the season.

Up next, the Terriers will take to the road, playing at UNCG next Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
