GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team played UNCG to a 0-0 tie on Friday night in Greensboro.
For the Terriers, it was their first tie of the season after recording four in 2015.
Goalkeeper
Mayson Liner delivered a standout performance for Wofford, totaling five saves in the tie. In addition, it was Liner's second shutout of the season. She also did not allow a goal in a 2-0 win over USC Upstate (9/13).
In the first half, the Terriers wasted no time creating offensive chances. In the early minutes,
Katie Beuerlein put a shot on goal that was saved by UNCG keeper Chloe Buehler. Wofford then forced Buehler to make two more saves, before allowing the Spartans their first shot.
Overall, the Terriers enjoyed a 4-3 shot advantage in the opening period. When the Spartans were able to acquire good looks at goal, Liner was ready, delivering two saves in the period. Both teams were also unable to convert on two corner kicks in the first half.
The second half was more of a defensive battle, with neither team creating many good scoring chances. UNCG did create a good opportunity in the 65
th minute, but Georgia Brown's shot attempt was saved by a diving Liner to keep the Spartans off the board.
After attempting four shots in the opening period, the Terriers were held to just one in the second half.
With both teams unable to net a goal in regulation, the Terriers went to overtime for the first time this season. In the first 10 minute overtime, both sides struggled to find offense. However, in the final minute of the period, Wofford defender
Brianna LaFontant's shot was deflected just wide by Buehler.
In the second overtime, the Terriers' best chance came in the third minute of the period, when Beuerlein's shot from just inside the box sailed wide. From there, both teams defended well, leaving no serious scoring chances the rest of the way.
Offensively, forward
Elise Fennegan led Wofford with three shot attempts, followed by Beuerlein, who had two. For the game, the Spartans outshot the Terriers, 12-7, while Wofford held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 5-4 advantage in saves.
