Jackson Leads Terriers Past VMI 88-70

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Cameron Jackson scored a career high 25 points to pace the Wofford Terriers to an 88-70 win over VMI on Thursday night in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. With the win, Wofford improves to 8-11 on the season and 3-3 in conference play, winning back to back conference games for the first time this season, while VMI falls to 4-13 overall and 1-5 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers are 7-1 inside Benjamin Johnson Arena this season and the Keydets remain winless (0-10) in road games.

"All in all, it was a really good game for our team and I'm proud of the guys," said head coach Mike Young.

Jackson's 25 points led all scorers. After going 8-9 from the field and earning his first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds in Wofford's last contest against Furman, the sophomore followed that up shooting 84% (11-13) against the Keydets. Jackson also pulled in a team high seven rebounds.

"Jackson seems so engaged lately," said Young. "He is ready to be a great player and you can expect good things to happen when we can throw it in to him in the post."

Jackson gives credit to his teammates for the good looks and is feeling confident on the floor.

"I took my time and was confident in there today," said Jackson. "My team fed me the ball and I was able to take advantage of it really well tonight."

Fletcher Magee scored 17 points as the guard went 5-11 from the field, 3-7 from deep and 4-4 from the charity stripe. The 17 point performance pushed Magee over 300 points for the season. In just his second career start, freshman Nathan Hoover tallied 13 points and three rebounds in 26 minutes of play. Nine of Hoover's 13 points came from three point range. Eric Garcia scored eight points and dished out eight assist while committing just two turnovers.

Armani Branch led VMI with 21 points on 8-13 from the field. QJ Peterson, the SoCon player of the week and leading scorer in the conference, followed with 18 points, though he only had four at the break and six of those points came from the free throw line. Julian Eleby, who entered the game averaging 14.1 points per game, finished with just five.

"Peterson is really good," said Young. "I thought our team guarded him well as a unit. We also took some things away from Eleby that are important to his game and his ability to score. We did a good job limiting them to 70 points and under 40% shooting in the second half."

Wofford led for 38:37 and the game was tied for 1:23 in a game that VMI never led. Wofford led 49-35 at the half and then came out and scored the first eight points of the second half to keep the Keydets at a safe distance.

"That meant a lot. We have had trouble coming out in the second half all year, so for us to come out and throw the first punch in the second half was big for us in this game and we hope to continue that," said Jackson.

After two home games, Wofford heads on the road for the next contest, taking on ETSU on Sunday in Johnson City. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ETSU fell 75-62 at Furman tonight and are now 4-2 in conference play.

"We are really excited to get back and play another quality opponent in our conference," said Jackson. "We want to get out and fight and continue to build off what we have been doing these last few games."
