SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team prevailed, 4-3, in their season opening match at USC Upstate on Thursday afternoon.
 
In a hostile environment, the Terriers clinched the match at 4-1. After the match was clinched, the Spartans took the final two singles matches to finish the match at 4-3.
 
The Terriers clinched the doubles point easily, with Curran Carver and Taylor Carlson winning their match, 6-1. Shortly after, Catherine Martin and Lauren Reid also won, 6-1, to get the team off to a positive start.
 
"I thought getting off to a good start in doubles was really important for us," coach Krissy Hall said. "I was really impressed with how we started off the day."
 
With an early advantage heading into singles play, Wofford was able to take three of the first four singles matches to clinch the match at 4-1.
 
"It was great to see our team play so well in singles," Hall said. "Starting off the season with a road match against a tough team like Upstate is never easy, so I'm extremely proud of how we responded."
 
Playing in the no. 6 spot, sophomore Curran Carver started off singles play with an easy win for the Terriers, taking down USC Upstate's Morgan Dodd, 6-2, 6-3. After Cassidy Hicks fell in her match, Lauren Reid won 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, to put the team one win away from clinching the match.
 
Playing in the no. 3 position, senior Kalli Karas rallied after losing the first set to win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and ensure the Terriers started the season, 1-0.
 
Up next, the Terriers will host their first match of the year this Saturday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. against North Carolina A&T.
