Terriers Rally in 4th to defeat UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team used a fourth quarter rally to defeat UNCG, 54-48 , on Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers now stand at 2-0 in the Southern Conference for the first time in program history.

Despite trailing by four points entering the fourth quarter, Wofford held the Spartans to just five fourth quarter points to emerge victorious.

"They never doubted themselves," head coach Jimmy Garrity said. "What makes us good is we're together as a team. They don't want to let each other down. I'm happy for them and unbelievably proud of them."

Grayson Pinholster delivered a career high 17 points, including a 5 of 6 showing from the free throw line. The senior forward scored 15 of those points in the second half, with eight coming in the final quarter. She was joined in double figures by Sarah Traynor, who tied her season high with 12 points. Traynor also added four assists.

"The game was a lot of fun," Pinholster said. "We're battling some injuries, but today we showed how together we are as a team. We're playing for each other and playing selfless basketball."

Although leading scorer Chloe Wanink saw her streak of consecutive double-figure scoring games end at seven, she helped out everywhere else, tying her career highs, with 10 rebounds and four assists. Making her first start of the season, forward Kelsey Lambdin recorded nine points on 4-6 from the floor.

The first quarter was evenly played, as neither team was able to separate. Despite shooting 43% compared to UNCG's 33%, the Terriers committed five turnovers in the quarter.

The second quarter was much of the same, as both teams defended well and struggled to find offense. Wofford led, 28-26, at the half. In the half, the Terriers held the Spartans to just one assist and forced five turnovers. However, the Spartans remained in the game largely due to 10 offensive rebounds.

After the Terriers scored the first four points out of halftime to build a six point cushion, the Spartans responded by scoring the next 13 points to build a seven point lead, which was the largest they held the entire game. However, Pinholster's layup in the final seconds of the third quarter cut the Terriers' deficit to four points heading into the final quarter.

Wofford's defense took control of the game in the fourth quarter, as they allowed only two points over the final 7:12 of the game. The Terriers were also a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line in the final quarter.

"The defense down the stretch was unbelievable," Garrity said. "Especially those last five minutes. We guarded the ball well and rebounded well."

Wanink, Traynor, and Maria Corella played all 40 minutes and the Terriers only used six players, the fewest to have appeared in a game for the team all season.

Up next, the Terriers will rest for a week, before hosting Furman next Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.
