CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball team set a program record for wins in the Division I era with a four set win over Chattanooga on the road Friday night. With the win, Wofford runs its season record to 19-10 and the Terriers move to 9-6 in conference play, tying last season's conference win total with one regular season match to go. Chattanooga falls to 13-17 overall and 6-10 in conference play.
"Any win late in the season is a great win," said head coach
Lynze Roos. 'To sweep Chattanooga on the season is a huge accomplishment for our program. Chattanooga has been one of the strongest teams in the league and always produces elite teams, so we are very happy with this road victory."
Roos and the team entered the match with the goal of breaking the record, set in 2009, and the team accomplished its goal. Wofford won the opening set 25-17 and the second set 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead at the break. The Mocs rallied to win the third set 25-22, but the Terriers fought back to win the fourth set 25-22 and clinch the victory.
"Breaking the win record for Wofford in the Divison I era was something we started talking about with the team just tonight," Roos added. "We have been so focused on getting better each match that I don't think the total really mattered until we earned it. This team is ecstatic to own the honor."
Catie Cronister led the Terriers with 24 kills. The sophomore was one dig shy (9) of recording her fifth consecutive double-double and 12
th of the year. Cronister hit .347 on the night, second best on the team, and added one ace and two blocks. The SoCon Offensive Player of the Month for October has double digit kills in 26 of Wofford's 29 matched and 20+ kills in 11 matches this season.
Catie did a really good job of keeping the Chattanooga defense working and finding herself opportunities to score," said Roos.
Sophomore
Kara Shacklette had an excellent night in the middle. The native of Louisville, Ky. hit a match high .480 with 12 kills and an impressive zero errors on 25 swings.
Colleen Reilly, too, contributed nicely in the middle. Reilly hit .273 with 14 kills and six blocks to contribute both offensively and defensively.
"Our middle attack was tough to stop in system," noted Roos. "Kara and Colleen both got really good looks from Lorissa (King)."
King had a nice showing. The sophomore setter finished with 46 assists, eight digs and five blocks, a season high.
Taylor Gill, Wofford's libero, tallied 21 digs in the win and passed the 500 dig mark on the year. Bjonae Jones joined Gill in double-digit digs with 10 and
Lauren Miller added five block assists to help the effort at the net.
As a team, Wofford hit .261 and held Chattanooga to just .160. Wofford won the battle at the net as well, and finished with 13 blocks to the Mocs' five.
Wofford, who sits fourth in the conference, concludes the regular season Saturday, Nov. 11 at ETSU. The Terriers fell to the Bucs 3-1 on the Oct. 13 meeting in Spartanburg and look to even the series.
