Women's Basketball Wins 73-68 in OT

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team won 73-68 over Winthrop in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Emily Ryan knocked down the game tying three with three seconds to play in regulation and Wofford outscored Winthrop 7-2 in the overtime period to secure the win. With the win, Wofford moves to 5-4 on the season while Winthrop drops to 1-7.
 
Wofford and Winthrop played a back and forth quarter as the teams traded buckets in the early going. The Terriers and the Eagles both struggled from the floor with both teams shooting under 40% from the field. Wofford only made five field goals in the quarter but three were from distance keeping the Terriers close as Winthrop led 15-14 after one period of play.
 
The Terrier's defensive intensity picked up in the second quarter and the offense followed suit. Wofford went 6-15 (40%) from the field while knocking down two triples. The defense held Winthrop to 3-12 (25%) from the field and only allowed the Eagles to score seven points in the quarter. Wofford was led by Marissa Bayer in the first half with eight points, two rebounds and one assist. The Terriers led at the break, 29-23.
 
Wofford opened the second half on a 6-2 run capped off by a three point play for Marissa Bayer extending the Terrier lead to 10 at the 9:02 mark. The ten point lead was slowly erased by the Eagles as Winthrop shot 12-18 (66%) from the field while knocking down five triples. Winthrop outscored the Terriers 31-24 and took the lead into the fourth quarter, 54-53.
 
Wofford trailed by four with just under five minutes to play in the game but the Terriers ended the quarter on a 7-3 run. Despite shooting just 4-18 (22%) from the field, Wofford was able to outscore the Eagles 13-12 to send the game into overtime. Emily Ryan's clutch three-pointer with just three seconds to play in regular time tied the game at 66-66.
 
The overtime period began with a Marissa Bayer layup to put the Terriers up 68-66 but Winthrop responded with a deuce of their own. Wofford then scored five straight to end the overtime period and secure the win. Marissa Bayer scored four of Wofford's seven points in the overtime period.
 
In the win, Wofford shot just 36% from the field but the Terriers converted from the free throw line going 13-17 in the game. The Terriers outrebounded the Eagles 45-42 and forced 16 Winthrop turnovers in the game. Marissa Bayer led the Terriers with 27 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Emily Ryan added 13 points and two assists while Cairo Booker added 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Kelsey Lambdin grabbed 11 rebounds in the game and added five points.
 
The Terriers return to the court on Saturday, December 16 when Wofford hosts UNC Wilmington at 7 PM.
