SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell to Mercer, 61-46, on Thursday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
The loss drops the Terriers to 12-14 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.
Despite delivering strong first and third quarter performances, the Terriers offensive struggles in the second and fourth quarters made the difference in the game. The Bears used a 12-0 run to open the second quarter and outscored Wofford, 13-3, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Chloe Wanink once again led the Terriers in scoring, pouring in 16 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
Grayson Pinholster also delivered a stellar performance, grabbing a career high 15 rebounds while adding 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting. After missing the team's last two games due to injury,
Sarah Traynor returned to score eight points and dish out five assists.
Both teams came out of the gate shooting the ball well, as neither team was able to separate in the first quarter. Booker had a team high six points in the period, while Pinholster and Corella added four each.
Mercer opened the second quarter with a 12-0 scoring run to take control of the game. The Terriers struggled from behind the arc in the first half, going just 2-for-13. Mercer's Sydni Means led all players with 12 points and six assists. Wanink led all Wofford players with seven points.
Sarah Traynor added five points and led the team with three assists in the first half.
The Terriers responded with a furious run to begin the second half. The team outscored Mercer, 11-3, to pull back within three points and force the Bears to call a timeout. Wofford cut the Bears lead to 42-41 on a Pinholster layup with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter. However, Mercer stifled the rally and took a five point lead to the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bears defense took control of the game, as they held the Terriers to just three points, the fewest they have scored in a quarter all season. Mercer's Sydni Means scored eight of her game high 22 points in the fourth as the Bears stretched their lead to double digits and built a comfortable lead for the game's final minutes.
Despite the loss, the Terriers won the rebounding battle, 40-33, including 18 offensive boards.
