Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Terriers Rout Catamounts in BenJo Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team defeated Western Carolina 84-56 on Saturday night, senior night for Eric Wagenlander, Ryan Sawvell, Jaylen Allen and Eric Garcia. The game was the final game played inside Benjamin Johnson Arena as the team will transition into the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium next season. Wofford is 11-2 in home games this season.

With the win, Wofford ends a two game losing streak and moves to 14-15 on the season and 9-7 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina falls to 7-21 overall and 2-13 in conference action.

"I thought we played a pretty good ballgame on a fabulous night for this team and this college," said head coach Mike Young. "We held them to under 60 points and under 40% from the field. We fought and we helped one another and did some things better defensively than we have done the last couple of weeks and that is a positive."

Young gave the starting nod to all four seniors.

"It was a great night for our seniors. All four started and we got them off the floor at the same time. I got some pressure from the students to put Wagenlander back in and I was more than happy to oblige," Young chuckled.

Garcia and Cameron Jackson led Wofford in scoring as both scored 19 points in the win. Garcia shot 50% from the field and 50% from three-point range, while going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. He also added nine assists and two steals while only committing two turnovers. Garcia entered the game with 1,999 points and 497 assists and tonight's numbers put him past 1,200 points and 500 assists for his career. Garcia is the first Terrier to accomplish this feat. With two more assists, Garcia will pass Drew Gibson for second all-time in career assists. His final assist with 3:39 to go was to fellow senior Sawvell for a slam.

"For us to send this building out with something like that was definitely a good way to go out," said Garcia.

Jackson recorded his fourth double-double of his season, tallying 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sawvell also recorded a double-double, his third in the last four games and the sixth of the season, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fletcher Magee was the fourth Terrier in double figures. Magee finished with 13 points and his streak of consecutive games in double figures is up to 41 games. The last time he was held to single digits was at Furman on Jan. 23, 2016.

Wofford only trailed for 1:38 in the game and dominated throughout the entire contest. Jackson started the scoring with a layup 40 seconds into the game. Wofford led 23-20 with 6:42 to go in the half, but went on a 21-6 run to finish the half and take a 44-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

Out of the half, Wofford stretched the 18 point lead to 26 and the Terriers never looked back, leading by as many as 32 with 3:24 to go. The basket at the 3:24 mark was the final basket made by Wofford in the game, thus the final basket made in Benjamin Johnson Arena. Wagenlander missed a three pointer and Jackson grabbed the rebounded and finished, fittingly, with a put back dunk.

The Terriers shot 42% from the field and the Catamounts shot 38.2%. Wofford went a perfect 16-16 from the line and shot 100% for the first time since the season opener at LSU.

Wofford heads on the road for the final two matchups of the regular season. First, the Terriers head to Lexington, Virginia to take on VMI on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Wofford finishes the regular season at Furman on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. before participating in the Southern Conference tournament March 3-6 in Asheville, N.C.
