Wofford Baseball Drops Contest At PC

CLINTON, S.C. – In the first midweek contest of the season, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-1 by Presbyterian College at the PC Baseball Complex. The Blue Hose jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and the Terriers were held to only four hits on the day.
 
Wofford begins the season 1-3 and Presbyterian College is 2-3. The Terriers were led by Carson Waln with two hits and a RBI. The Blue Hose had five players with two hits each, with Colton Chapman and Brett Auckland adding two RBIs each. Wofford left 13 runners on base, while Presbyterian stranded nine. There were a total of eight batters hit by pitch in the game, four by each team.
 
The Terriers had two runners on base in the top of the first inning after a walk to Max McDougald and a single from Brett Hash, but both were stranded. In the bottom of the first, the Blue Hose loaded the bases after a walk and a pair of batters hit by pitch. A third hit by pitch plated the first run of the game and a double made it 3-0. A single drove in two more runs and the Blue Hose had a 5-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the second inning. Alex Malsch led off the third inning with a triple and Brett Hash walked with two outs, but both runners were stranded. The Blue Hose had runners at second and third with two outs before a ground out ended the scoring chance. Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Tyler Weyenberg hit a solo home run for a 6-0 advantage.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Kody Ruedisili and Max McDougald reached on walks. With runners on the corners, a single up the middle by Carson Waln drove in Ruedisili for a 6-1 score. The Blue Hose had a pair of singles before a double play ended the fifth inning. Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the sixth after being hit by pitch, but a double play ended the top half.
 
The Blue Hose left one runner on base at the end of the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Wofford loaded the bases with three straight walks but a pop fly ended the scoring chance. A lead-off single was erased with a pickoff in the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Hose added two more singles, but were unable to add to the lead.
 
The Terriers left one runner on base in the top of the eighth after Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch. In the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Hose loaded the bases on two singles and a hit by pitch before a fly ball ended the inning. Max McDougald led off the top of the ninth with a walk. Carson Waln added a single with one out, but a double play ended the ball game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Elliot Lance (0-1) gave up four runs in a third of an inning. Matt Ellmyer worked 5.1 innings with two runs allowed on seven hits. Jake Hershman struck out the lone batter he faced. Grant Byers went 1.2 innings and did not allow a run on five hits. Merritt Huber and Reece Maniscalco each faced one batter.
 
Eric Miles (1-0) started for the Blue Hose and went five innings with one run allowed on three hits and four strikeouts. Connor Jahn did not allow a hit in an inning. Nick Wise went two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run. Ryan Hedrick worked 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and one strikeout. Tristan Roberts went the final inning with one hit allowed.
 
The home slate for the Terriers begins Friday at 5:00 p.m. against James Madison at Russell C. King Field, followed by contests against Georgetown and UNC Asheville.
