Baseball Falls In Home Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team opened the home slate with a 5-1 loss to James Madison University on Friday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Dukes had four solo home runs in the first three innings to build a lead and held the Terriers to only five hits in the game.
 
Wofford begins the season 1-4 and James Madison is 4-1. The Terriers were led by Brett Hash with a pair of hits and Ty Reginelli with an RBI. Adam Scott set a new career high with 12 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. The Dukes were limited to only seven hits in the game, four of which were solo home runs. Brandon Withers had ten strikeouts and two walks in the contest.
 
The Dukes had a lead-off single to start the game, but the runner was stranded at second base after a pair of strikeouts. Kody Ruedisili opened the bottom of the first with a walk and then he stole second. With two outs he stole third base. Carson Waln walked and stole second base, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance. Josh Wyatt started the second inning with a solo home run to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the second inning, Mike Sciorra opened the third inning with a solo home run to take a 2-0 advantage. With one out, Kyle McPherson hit a solo home run and with two outs Brett Johnson added a solo home run for a 4-0 lead in the middle of the third inning. The Terries went down in order to end the third and the Dukes left one on base in the top of the fourth.
 
In the bottom of the fourth frame, Cody Miller singled with two outs but was unable to advance. The Dukes were retired in order to open the fifth inning. Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch to lead off the Wofford half of the fifth. Mack Nathanson reached on a fielder's choice and Reed Massey followed with a single. A wild pitch moved Nathanson to third and Massey stole second, but a strikeout and ground out ended the scoring chance for the Terriers.
 
Adam Scott struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning. Brett Hash led off the bottom of the sixth with a double. With one out, Hash moved to third on a wild pitch and with two outs a double by Ty Reginelli off the wall in left center scored Hash for a 4-1 game. The Dukes went in order in the top of the seventh, with the third out on a diving catch and throw across by Max McDougald at third base. Wofford was retired in order on the other side of the seventh inning stretch.
 
The Dukes left one runner on base in the top of the eighth inning. Brett Hash had a single with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but was unable to advance. In the top of the ninth, two Dukes were hit by pitch. A single up the middle with one out drove in one run for a 5-1 lead. Wofford had one runner on base in the bottom of the ninth after Alex Malsch walked, but he was stranded at second to end the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Adam Scott (0-2) went six innings and gave up four runs on six hits. He set a new career high with 12 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. The 12 strikeouts are the sixth most in a single game in school history. Merritt Huber retired three straight batters in the seventh inning. David Ehmen faced one batter and recorded one out. Jake Hershman went an inning with one run allowed on one hit and three strikeouts. Reece Maniscalco threw the final two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
 
Brandon Withers (2-0) started for the Dukes and gave up one run on four hits in 5.2 innings with ten strikeouts. Matt Colon went 2.1 innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts. Michael Evans threw the final innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
 
The home slate for the Terriers continues on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Georgetown followed by UNC Asheville on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
