Terriers Stumble at Furman 78-69

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Despite Cameron Jackson scoring 24 points and Fletcher Magee adding 20, the Wofford men's basketball team fell 78-69 at Furman on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Wofford falls to 15-16 on the season and 10-8 in Southern Conference play, while Furman improves to 21-10 overall and 14-4 in conference action.

Jackson led Wofford with 24 points and 10 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season and just one point short of tying his career high. The sophomore went 8-9 from the field with his only miss, a three point attempt, coming with 10 seconds left on the clock.  Jackson also recorded a double-double in the matchup with Furman earlier this season.

"He was terrific," said head coach Mike Young. "He willed us back a couple of times today and I'm proud of him."

Magee followed Jackson with 20 points. With his performance, he eclipsed 1,000 career points, becoming the first sophomore in Wofford history to reach the mark.

"That's pretty good," Young chuckled. "He's got a lot more in him and he is just going to get better and better."

Derrick Brooks added eight points off the bench and Eric Garcia finished with seven points, five assists, and zero turnovers.

Furman controlled the game early on as the Paladins jumped out to a 5-0 lead and stretched the lead to 10 points at 24-14. Young called timeout to regroup the Terriers and it worked. Wofford went on an 18-6 run to tie the game at 32. Matthew Pegram made a layup to give the Terriers their first lead of the game at 34-32. The teams swapped baskets the remainder of the half and with Wofford leading 39-37 Jordan Lyons hit a three pointer with three seconds to go to send Furman to the locker room with a 40-39 edge.

Magee sunk a three out of the half to put Wofford back on top. The Terriers started the half on a 13-6 run. With 11:52 left in the game, Furman went back on top 55-54. The teams swapped baskets and were tied at 60 before Furman went on a 7-0 run to take a 67-60 lead and were able to keep the Terriers at bay and hold on for the win.

Wofford shot 43.1% from the field and Furman shot 53.6%. Though ranking sixth nationally and tops in the conference in free through shooting, Wofford shot just 65.4% (17-26) from the line. Furman outscored the Terriers 38-22 in the paint and 36-15 off the bench. Wofford led for 8:44 in the contest and Furman led for 27 minutes in a game that was tied five times and had eight lead changes.

Furman was led by senior Kris Acox who went 12-14 from the field and scored 25 points. Geoff Beans followed with 18 points on six made three pointers. Daniel Fowler (11) and Devin Sibley (10) joined them in double figures.

Today's game concludes the regular season for Wofford. The Terriers and Paladins are the only two Southern Conference teams that do not play on Monday night, so Wofford awaits word on its seeding and opponent for the conference tournament that is held March 3-6 at the US Cellular Center in Asheville.

"I look forward to taking this team to Asheville," said Young. "We have a chance to do some good things and it's going to be a lot of fun."
