SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's tennis team fell, 4-1, to Coastal Carolina on Friday afternoon at Reeves Tennis Center.
 
The loss drops the Terriers to 9-6 on the season and is the team's first defeat at home in 2017.
 
The Terriers fought hard, but were unable to take the doubles point from the Chanticleers. After Coastal Carolina took the no. 3 doubles position 6-0 behind Rylie Cox and Natalie Wall, the Terriers were close in both the no. 1 and no. 2 spots. Unfortunately, the Chanticleers took the no. 1 doubles match, 7-5, behind Marie Babayan and Sara Bondar. At the time that Coastal Carolina clinched the point, Taylor
Carlson and 
Catherine Martin were tied, 5-5, at no. 2.
 
In singles action, the Chanticleers took advantage of the momentum and won the first finished match, as Maria Khomchenko defeated 
Emily Erickson, 6-0, 6-1, at the no. 6 position. This was followed by Babayan's 6-2, 6-0 win at no. 3 to put Coastal Carolina within one point of clinching the match.
 
The Terriers put themselves on the scoreboard with Carlson's 6-2, 6-0 win at the no. 4 spot. However, the Chanticleers closed out the match on a 6-3, 6-2 win from Cox at the no. 1 position.
 
Both 
Curran Carver and Hicks's matches were in the second set and went unfinished.
 
Up next, the Terriers will open SoCon play, as they host Furman next Wednesday, March 22 at 3 p.m.
