Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Yale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Yale at Russell C. King Field. In the first game, the Terriers scored one run in each of the first three innings on the way to a 6-2 win. The second game was tied at six after four innings when the Bulldogs scored 12 unanswered runs. The Terriers rallied in the bottom of the ninth, but were defeated 18-15.  
                    
Wofford is 9-11 on the season, while Yale is 4-9 overall. The Terriers had a total of 30 hits in the two games, led by Carson Waln with five and Andrew Orzel and Reed Massey with four each. Wofford had four home runs on the day.
 
In the first game, Yale was retired in order in the first inning. Kody Ruedisili and Andrew Orzel singled to lead off the bottom half to give Wofford runners on the corners. Brett Hash hit into a double play, but Ruedisili scored for a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs had a single with two outs in the top of the second.
 
With one out in the bottom of the second, Cody Miller hit a solo home run to left center for a 2-1 lead. It was his second homer of the season. Yale was retired in order in the top of the third and Kody Ruedisili reached on an error in the bottom of the third. With two outs, a double to center by McClain Bradley scored Ruedisili for a 3-0 advantage.
 
After Yale was retired in order to begin the fourth, Carson Waln tripled to lead off the bottom half. Waln was out at home on a fielder's choice and Max McDougald singled. Following another fielder's choice, the Terriers had runners at second and third with two outs. A single to center field by Alex Malsch drove in both runners for a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs went in order in the top of the fifth.
 
The Terriers had two outs in the fifth when McClain Bradley walked and stole second. A single by Carson Waln scored Bradley for a 6-0 advantage. In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs had a runner reach on an error with two outs. A home run by Alex Stiegler cut the lead to 6-2. Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the sixth after a single by Reed Massey. In the top of the seventh with two outs, the Bulldogs had a double, but were unable to score.
 
Wofford starter Spencer Kulman (4-1) went seven innings for the complete game. He gave up two unearned runs on four hits, along with eight strikeouts to tie his career high and he did not issue a walk.
 
Tyler Duncan (0-3) started for the Bulldogs and went five innings with six runs allowed on nine hits, along with one strikeout. Drew Scott worked an inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout.
 
The second game began with Yale taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a 2-run homer by Richard Slenker and an RBI double from Harrison White. Wofford had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the first after a single by Andrew Orzel and a walk by Brett Hash. A wild pitch scored Orzel and then Mack Nathanson reached on an error that allowed a run to score. Brett Rodriguez had an RBI triple and an RBI single from Max McDougald gave Wofford a 4-3 lead.
 
Yale had the bases loaded in the top of the second on a double, walk and hit by pitch with two outs. A wide pitch advanced the runners and tied the game at 4 before a fly ball ended the top half. Carson Waln and Andrew Orzel singled to lead off the bottom of the second, but a fly ball and double play ended the frame.
 
With two outs in the top of the third, Brian Ronai walked and stole second. A single by Tom Ruddy drove in Ronai for a 5-4 lead. Wofford left a pair of runners on base to end the third inning. Three straight hits for the Bulldogs in the top of the fourth added a run before a pair of strikeouts left two runners stranded. In the bottom of the fourth with two outs and one runner on base, McClain Bradley hit a ball over the fence in left center to tie the game at 6-6. It was his first home run of the season and second of his career.
 
The Bulldogs had one runner reach in the top of the fifth, but was picked off. Wofford added a single by Reed Massey with two outs in the fifth. With two outs in the top of the sixth and a runner on base, Alec Hoeschel hit a home run to right center to give the Bulldogs an 8-6 lead. The Terriers had runners on the corners after singles by Carson Waln and Brett Hash, but a double play ended the scoring chance.
 
Back-to-back walks started the top of the seventh for the Bulldogs. Yale ended up scoring five runs on two hits and took advantage of three Wofford errors on the way to a 13-6 lead at the seventh inning stretch. Mack Nathanson led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Brett Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Ty Reginelli drew a pinch hit walk to load the bases. After a pair of strikeouts, a walk by Cody Miller plated a run. With the bases still loaded, a single by Andrew Orzel drove in two runs for a 13-9 game.
 
Yale added three runs on two hits in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 16-9. The Terriers left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth. The Bulldogs had a two-run homer by Andrew Herrera in the top of the ninth for an 18-9 advantage. A two-run homer by Cody Miller to right center cut the score to 18-11. It was Miller's second home run of the season. Alec Cargin had a double with one out and Kody Ruedisili then homered to center to make it an 18-13 game. It was the first home run of the season for Ruedisili. Stone Pellegrino added a single and he scored on a double by Mack Nathanson down the left field line. A single by Brett Rodriguez scored Nathanson for an 18-15 game and Ty Reginelli added a double. A line out into a double play ended the Wofford rally and the game.
 
Jake Hershman started for the Terriers and went three innings with five runs allowed on four hits. Merritt Huber (0-2) worked 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with a career-high three strikeouts. David Ehmen gave up two runs in a third of an inning. Chris Sheehan struck out two in two-thirds of an inning, but three runs scored on two hits. Cole Bradley allowed two runs on two hits in a third of an inning with one strikeout. Quintin Pile gave up one run in an inning and Rasesh Pandya allowed two runs in the ninth.
 
Yale starter Thomas Espig gave up four runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Griffin Dey (1-0) went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Drew Scott gave up one run in two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts. Alex Stiegler worked the final 2.1 innings with seven runs allowed on six hits and one strikeout.
 
Wofford and Yale will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Terriers host Winthrop on Wednesday night at King Field before beginning Southern Conference play against Furman on March 24.
