SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final contest of a four-game weekend series, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 17-8 by Yale on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead after five innings and added four runs in the eighth and ninth for the win.

Wofford is 9-12 on the season, while Yale is 5-9 overall. The two teams split the weekend series, with each winning two games. The Terriers were led by
Max McDougald with three hits, while
Stone Pellegrino had a grand slam home run in the eighth inning. Tim McGraw was 4-of-4 from the plate for the Bulldogs and Griffin Dey was 3-of-5 with five RBIs for the Bulldogs.

In the first inning, the Bulldogs opened the game with a single. With two outs and the bases loaded after two walks, back-to-back singles made it a 3-0 game. After Wofford went in order to end the first, both teams left one runner on base in the second frame. The Bulldogs had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the third when a double pushed the lead to 6-0 and an RBI single made it 7-0. Wofford then went in order in the bottom of the third.

Back-to-back singles started the fourth inning and with one out a single added a run for the Bulldogs.
Brett Hash doubled in the bottom of the fourth, but was unable to advance. With two outs in the top of the fifth, a triple by Tim DeGraw added a run for a 9-0 lead. The Terriers were retired in order to end the fifth and the Bulldogs went in order in the top of the sixth. Wofford added a pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth by
Max McDougald and
Andrew Orzel, but did not score. Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh.

The Bulldogs got the bats going again in the eighth inning, opening with a single and added a double with one out. A fielder's choice scored one run and then Griffin Dey hit a three-run homer for a 13-0 lead. Wofford started the bottom of the eighth with a double by
Alec Cargin.
Max McDougald singled with one out and Cargin scored on a single by
Brett Rodriguez.
Ty Reginelli was hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Stone Pellegrino cleared the fence in left center for his first career home run as the lead was cut to 13-5. Three more singles from
McClain Bradley,
Dylan May and
Mack Nathanson added a run, but two Terriers were left on base to end the eighth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Yale had runners on the corners when a balk plated a run. An RBI single and a fielding error, plus a fielder's choice, added three more runs for a 17-6 advantage. Wofford led off the bottom of the ninth with a double by
Max McDougald. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. An RBI single by
McClain Bradley scored
Brett Rodriguez, who had reached on a walk, but a fly ball ended the game with a 17-8 final score.

Austin Higginbotham (0-2) started for the Terriers and went four innings with eight runs allowed on ten hits, while striking out seven batters.
Grant Byers threw 3.1 innings and gave up five runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Reece Maniscalco retired the two batters he faced.
Elliot Lance worked the ninth and gave up four runs on two hits.

Yale starter Scott Politz (3-1) went 7.1 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits, along with ten strikeout. Kumar Nambiar threw the final 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits, plus two strikeouts.

The Terriers host Winthrop on Wednesday night at King Field before beginning Southern Conference play against Furman on March 24.
