Baseball Falls To La Salle

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a rainy Tuesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 7-6 by La Salle at Russell C. King Field. The Explorers took a 5-0 lead in the middle of the fifth, but the Terriers. Wofford scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but left the tying run on third base to end the game.  
 
Wofford is 3-9 on the season, while La Salle is 1-11. The Terriers were led by Kody Ruedisili with a 4-of-5 performance at the plate. Brett Hash added a pair of hits and Mack Nathanson hit a home run. Austin Constantini was 5-of-5 for the Explorers. The teams combined for 25 hits in the contest, 14 by La Salle and 11 for the Terriers.
 
The Explorers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of singles and a fielder's choice. Wofford was retired in order to end the first inning and La Salle went in order in the top of the second. Max McDougald had an infield single with one out in the bottom of the second, but was unable to advance. Both teams had singles in the third inning.
 
To lead off the fourth inning, Ben Faso cleared the fence in left center for a 2-0 lead. With runners on the corners after back-to-back singles, a sacrifice fly plated a run to make it 3-0 in the middle of the frame. Wofford was retired in order to end the fourth. The Explorers had two runners on base when a single drove in a run. A fielding error allowed another run to score and La Salle had a 5-0 advantage when the inning ended with the bases loaded.
 
Wofford had a single by Carson Waln and a double by Reed Massey in the bottom of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Ty Reginelli made it 5-1 and a single by Kody Ruedisili drove in Massey for a 5-2 game. The Explorers loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with nobody out. A sacrifice fly plated one run for a 6-2 score in the middle of the inning.
 
Brett Hash doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Mack Nathanson cleared the fence in left center for a 6-4 game. It was his fourth home run of the season. Both teams were then retired in order in the seventh inning. In the top of the eighth, the Explorers led off with a pair of singles and a bunt single loaded the bases. After a strikeout, a foul out was followed by an out at the plate to end the frame.
 
Kody Ruedisili singled to begin the bottom of the eighth and then moved to second on a wild pitch. A single by Brett Hash gave the Terriers runners on the corners with one out. A pop up and strikeout ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. In the top of the ninth, with rain falling heavily, the Explorers led off with a double and with one out the runner scored on a wild pitch for a 7-4 lead. Carson Waln walked with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, a double that hit the top of the fence in left center and bounced back into play by Dylan May scored Waln for a 7-5 score. A triple to right center by Kody Ruedisili made it a one run game, but a strikeout ended the contest.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Grant Byers (0-2) went four innings with three runs allowed on six hits, along with two strikeouts. Quintin Pile gave up two run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Merritt Huber gave up one hit and David Ehmen allowed one run on a hit in a third of an inning. Chris Sheehan worked three innings without allowing a run on three hits and three strikeouts. Jordan Accetta went the ninth and allowed one run on one hit, along with a strikeout.
 
Matt Holt (1-0) started for the Explorers and threw five innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Blake James gave up two runs on two hits with a strikeout in two innings. Jorge Jimenez earned the save by going the final two innings with two runs allowed on four hits and four strikeouts.
 
Wofford will be at home for the next thirteen games, including a game Wednesday against Longwood at 5:00 p.m.
