SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A run in the seventh inning proved to be the game winner as the Wofford College baseball team earned a 6-5 win over Longwood on Wednesday night at Russell C. King Field. The Lancers tied the game in the top of the seventh, but
Alex Malsch scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the frame to gain the lead.
Jordan Accetta struck out four batters in the final two innings for the win.
Wofford is 4-9 on the season, while Longwood is 5-9. The Terriers were led by
Brett Hash and
Cody Miller, each with a pair of hits. The Lancers outhit the Terriers 12 to 6, with four players having two hits each. Longwood left 12 runners on base and Wofford stranded six.
With one out in the top of the first, the Lancers loaded the bases with a pair of singles and an error. A fielder's choice plated a run and a fly ball to center ended the top half with a 1-0 score in favor of Longwood. Wofford's
Alex Malsch walked with one out in the bottom of the first. He stole second and moved to third when
Mack Nathanson reached first on an error. A wild pitch allowed Malsch to tie the game at the end of the first.
The Lancers added a single in the top of the second inning.
Cody Miller opened the Wofford half of the second with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball by
Carson Waln to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead.
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch with two outs and stole second, but was stranded. Longwood loaded the bases in the top of the third, but a ground out ended the scoring chance.
Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the third after a single by
Brett Hash and Longwood was retired in order in the top of the fourth.
Cody Miller led off the bottom of the fourth with a double that bounced off third base and past the fielder. He moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a single through the right side by
Brett Rodriguez for a 3-1 advantage.
Longwood had one out in the top of the fifth when they hit back-to-back singles. A fly ball and ground out ended the top half. With one out in the bottom of the fifth,
Brett Hash hit a solo home run to the left of the scoreboard. His third homer of the season gave Wofford a 4-1 lead. The Lancers had a double with one out and then an RBI single cut the score to 4-2. With two on and two outs, a double plated a pair of runs to tie the game at 4-4.
The Terriers had
Carson Waln reach on a fielding error with one out in the bottom of the sixth and then he stole second. A ground out moved Waln to third and a single by
Andrew Orzel gave Wofford a 5-4 lead at the end of six innings. The Lancers led off the seventh with a double and a single. With one out a walk loaded the bases and after a strikeout another walk plated a run to tie the game at 5. A strikeout ended the top of the seventh with the bases still loaded.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, the Terriers had runners on the corners after a strikeout/wild pitch to
Alex Malsch and a walk to
Max McDougald. A wild pitch allowed Malsch to score and Wofford led 6-5 headed to the eighth inning. The Lancers went in order in the top half of the eighth and the Terriers left one on base in the frame. In the top of the ninth, a ground ball and a pair of strikeouts looking ended the game.
Wofford starting pitcher
Matt Ellmyer went a career-long 5.2 innings with four runs allowed on ten hits, along with two strikeouts.
Jake Hershman threw a third of an inning with one run allowed on two hits and a strikeout.
Jordan Accetta (1-0) closed the game by not allowing a hit in the final three innings with a career-high seven strikeouts.
Tyler Morgan started for the Lancers and threw 5.2 innings with five runs allowed on five hits, while striking out four batters. Michael Catlin (1-1) went the final 2.1 innings and gave up one run on a hit and had two strikeouts.
Wofford is in the midst of a 14-game home stand. The Terriers will host Monmouth on Friday and Sunday, with a game against La Salle on Saturday, this weekend.
