ASHEVILLE, N.C. – On Tuesday evening, the Wofford College baseball team used a big fourth inning to earn a win 17-8 over UNC Asheville at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs scored five unearned runs in the second inning for the lead, but the Terriers answered with twelve runs in the fourth inning to go up 13-5 and added four runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory.
Wofford is 18-16 on the season, while UNC Asheville is 13-19. The two teams split the home-and-home series this year, with each team winning on the road.
Kody Ruedisili led the Terriers with three hit and four runs scored.
Alex Malsch and
Max McDougald each added three hits for Wofford. Chris Troost led the Bulldogs with three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Kody Ruedisili opened the game with a single and went to second on a fielding error.
McClain Bradley added a single and he Bulldogs turned a double play, but Ruedisili scored on the play for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs left one runner on base after a single. Wofford stranded one in the top of the second after a single by
Max McDougald.
The Bulldogs had runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the second after an error and single. An RBI single tied the game at 1-1 and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. Chris Troost drove in two runs on a single and a double by Danny Wilson added two more runs for a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the third inning,
Alex Malsch led off with a single and moved to second on an error. A bunt single by
Kody Ruedisili and a hit by pitch to
Brett Hash loaded the bases with one out. A pair of strikeouts ended the scoring chance for the Terriers. The Bulldogs added a double in the bottom of the third with two outs.
Brett Rodriguez walked to begin the fourth inning and he moved to third on a double by
Max McDougald. An RBI ground out by
Ty Reginelli cut the lead to 5-2 and
Alex Malsch walked for runners on first and third.
Kody Ruedisili reached on a fielder's choice, with McDougald safe on the throw to home for a 5-3 score. A walk to
McClain Bradley with one out loaded the bases and a walk to
Brett Hash scored a run to cut the lead to one run.
Andrew Orzel reached second on a throwing error on a fielder's choice that plated two runs, which gave Wofford a 6-5 lead. A wild pitch allowed a run to score and then back-to-back hit by pitches loaded the bases. A double by
Max McDougald added two more runs, a sacrifice fly by
Ty Reginelli scored one and an infield single from
Alex Malsch pushed the lead to 11-5.
Kody Ruedisili walked and a single by
McClain Bradley added a run. Another walk loaded the bases with two outs and
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch to score a run for a 13-5 lead in the middle of the fourth inning.
After the Bulldogs were retired in order to end the fourth inning, both teams went in order in the fifth inning. The Terriers had three straight singles by
Alex Malsch,
Kody Ruedisili and
McClain Bradley to load the bases in the top of the sixth inning. A
Brett Hash infield single added a run and a passed ball scored a run for a 15-5 lead. A sacrifice fly by
Andrew Orzel brought home a run and a
Dylan May ground out made it 17-5. The Bulldogs went in order to end the sixth inning.
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh. The Bulldogs ended a stretch of ten straight batters retired with a single to lead off the bottom of the seventh. They added a double with one out and a sacrifice fly drove in a run for a 17-6 score. Wofford went in order in the top of the eighth inning and UNCA led off the bottom half with a double. A sacrifice fly added a run for a 17-7 game at the end of eight innings.
In the ninth inning,
Brett Rodriguez singled with two outs and he moved to second on a balk before being stranded. Joe Tietjen led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run. One runner was left on base to end the game with a 17-8 final score.
Wofford starter
Chris Sheehan (3-0) went five innings with five unearned runs allowed on six hits, along with two strikeouts.
Quintin Pile worked a three up, three down inning.
Rasesh Pandya threw an inning with one run allowed on two hits and a strikeout.
Elliot Lance went the final two innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with a strikeout.
Danny Wilson was the Bulldog starter and threw two innings with one run allowed on three hits, plus two strikeouts. Kole Harris went an inning with two hits and three strikeouts. Blake Brown, Justin Woods (2-1) and Ryan Tapp combined to allow 12 runs on four hits and six walks in an inning. Jesse Juday worked two innings with four runs allowed on four hits and a strikeout. Austin Fahr threw two innings without allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts. Brandon Harris gave up one hit in the ninth with two strikeouts.
The 12 runs scored by Wofford in the fourth inning are tied for the second most in school history (13, 1983 vs. Gardner-Webb). The 17 total runs in the game were the second most this season by the Terriers (18 vs. Georgetown, 2/25). Wofford will begin a three-game Southern Conference road series at UNCG on Thursday night.
