GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Friday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team held off a ninth inning rally by UNCG for an 8-7 win at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The game was tied at three after the fourth inning and then the Terriers scored five runs in the seventh inning for an 8-3 lead. The Spartans got one run back in the eighth and scored three in the ninth, but left the tying run on base to end the game.

Wofford is 20-16 on the season and 5-3 in the Southern Conference. UNCG moves to 21-13 overall and 7-4 in the league. Wofford has won the series against UNCG for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Terriers were led by
McClain Bradley and
Alex Malsch with two hits each, while
Andrew Orzel drove in three runs. Ben Spitznagel and Caleb Webster each had three hits for the Spartans, who had eleven hits to the Terriers' eight in the game. Â

With one out in the top of the first,
McClain Bradley doubled but was stranded at third base. The Spartans led off with back-to-back singles and used a pair of fielder's choices to take a 1-0 lead. In the second inning,
Reed Massey reached on a strikeout/wild pitch and was left on third base to end the top half. In bottom of the second, a solo home run by Tripp Shelton gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.

Alex Malsch singled to start the third inning and
Kody Ruedisili walked. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners. A ground out by
Brett Hash scored Malsch for a 2-1 game in the middle of the third. The Spartans led off the bottom of the third with a double and a single. A sacrifice fly added a run for a 3-1 lead at the end of three innings.

The Terriers had two outs in the top of the fourth when
Max McDougald walked.
Cody Miller followed by clearing the fence in left center, his sixth homer of the season, to tie the game at 3-3. The Spartans left one runner on base after a triple with two outs. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fifth inning and the Spartans had one runner reach on a walk.

After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the sixth inning, the Spartans led off with a double. A pair of ground outs advanced the runner to third base. On a wild pitch, the runner was out at home attempting to score to end the sixth inning.
Max McDougald reached first on catcher's interference to open the seventh inning. With one out,
Alex Malsch singled and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. A ground out by
Kody Ruedisili drove in McDougald for a 4-3 lead. A single by
McClain Bradley scored Malsch for a 5-3 advantage.
Brett Hash added a single and
Mack Nathanson walked to load the bases with two outs. A double by
Andrew Orzel cleared the bases and Wofford took an 8-3 lead at the seventh inning stretch.

The Spartans left one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh inning and Wofford was retired in order to start the eighth inning. Andrew Moritz led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to cut the score to 8-4. UNCG left one runner on base to end the eighth inning. Wofford went in order in the top of the ninth. A pair of ground outs in the bottom of the ninth was followed by an infield single. A triple by Caleb Webster drove in a run to make it an 8-5 game. A hit by pitch and wild pitch cut the lead to 8-6 with two outs. A single drove in a run to make it a one run game before a fly ball to centerfield ended the game with the tying run left on base.

Wofford starter
Spencer Kulman (7-2) threw seven innings with three runs allowed on seven hits. He struck out six batters with three walks.
Reece Maniscalco allowed one run on one hit in the eighth inning, along with one strikeout.
Cole Bradley gave up three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Jordan Accetta allowed one hit and
Merritt Huber earned the save by getting the final out.

Matt Frisbee (5-2) was the Spartans starter and went 6.1 innings with five runs allowed on four hits, along with four strikeouts. Chad Sykes worked two-thirds of an inning with three runs scored on three hits. Â Brandon Stephens threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.

Wofford and UNCG will complete the three-game series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
