Baseball Drops Series Finale At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. –The Wofford College baseball team rallied late before dropping the series finale 13-12 to UNCG on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead, but the Terriers battled back to make it a 6-5 game in the middle of the seventh. UNCG added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and five in the eighth. Wofford responded with seven runs in the top of the ninth, but left the tying run on second base.
                    
Wofford is 20-17 on the season and 5-4 in the Southern Conference. UNCG moves to 22-13 overall and 8-4 in the league. Despite the loss, Wofford has won the series against UNCG for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Terriers were led by Brett Hash with four RBIs and Mack Nathanson with three RBIs. Eleven different Terriers had hits in the contest. Ryan Clinch and Caleb Webster each had three hits for the Spartans, while Michael Gross had four RBIs.
 
Both teams had singles in the first inning and left one runner stranded. In the second frame, both teams were retired in order. Wofford went in order to start the third inning. The Spartans had a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the third. After a sacrifice bunt, a single drove in a run for a 1-0 advantage. A single and a fielding error plated a second run. Following a hit by pitch, Michael Goss hit a three-run homer to left center for a 5-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth, Carson Waln walked with two outs and then Andrew Orzel singled. A shot over the fence in left center by Mack Nathanson, his ninth home run of the season, cut the lead to 5-3. The Spartans went in order to end the fourth inning and Wofford went in order in the top of the fifth inning. The lead-off batter in the bottom of the fifth reached on an error. A single gave the Spartans runners on first and third, which was followed by an RBI ground out for a 6-3 score.
 
McClain Bradley led off the top of the sixth with a walk and Brett Hash was then hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and a ground out by Andrew Orzel scored Bradley to cut the lead to 6-4. The Spartans added a single in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, but a diving catch by Mack Nathanson in left field ended the inning.
 
In the top of the seventh, Max McDougald opened with a single and Brett Rodriguez added a double. A sacrifice fly by Alex Malsch drove in McDougald and moved Rodriguez to third for a 6-5 game. A double play sent the game to the seventh inning stretch. A lead-off single for the Spartans in the bottom of the seventh was followed by a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, back-to-back RBI singles made it an 8-5 advantage.
 
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. The Spartans had a single, walk and hit by pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth. A double drove in two runs for a 10-5 lead. An RBI single and a ground out pushed the advantage to 12-5. A wild pitch added a run for a 13-5 advantage at the end of eight innings.
 
Stone Pellegrino singled in the bottom of the ninth with one out and Alec Cargin added a single. A single by Brett Rodriguez drove in a run and a single by Alex Malsch loaded the bases with one out. An RBI single by Kody Ruedisili and a bases loaded walk by McClain Bradley plated a run for a 13-8 score. With the bases still loaded, a grand slam by Brett Hash to left center made it a 13-12 game. It was his ninth home run of the season and the Terriers' second grand slam of the year. Carson Waln added a single, but he was called out at third advancing on a single by Dylan May. A fly ball to center field ended the game.
 
Wofford starter Austin Higginbotham (2-4) threw four innings with six runs allowed on six hits. Matt Ellmyer went 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on two hits and a strikeout. Quintin Pile went two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on three hits. Merritt Huber gave up two runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Jordan Accetta had a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
 
Dan Loats (3-2) was the Spartans starter and went five innings with four runs allowed on three hits, along with nine strikeouts. Jack Maynard did not allow a hit in an inning on the mound. Andrew Wantz threw an inning with one run allowed on two hits. Chad Sykes allowed six runs on five hits in one and a third innings. Brandon Stephens gave up one run on three hits in the final two-thirds of an inning to earn the save.
 
Wofford will play at Winthrop on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. before returning home for a three-game series against Samford beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m.
