SPARTANBURG, S.C. – To open a weekend Southern Conference series, the Wofford College baseball team defeated Samford 7-5 on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers took a lead in the first inning, but the game was tied after the third and fourth innings. Wofford scored twice each in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.

Wofford is 21-17 on the season and 6-4 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 21-16 overall and 4-6 in the league.
McClain Bradley led the Terriers with a home run and a pair of RBIs, while
Brett Hash had two hits.
Adam Scott did not allow an earned run in seven innings on the mound. Jordan Fucci and Taylor Garris had two hits each for the Bulldogs. Samford outhit the Terriers 11 to 7 in the contest and Wofford tied a season high with six errors. Â

The Bulldogs had a single in the top of the first inning, but stranded the runner at third base. Wofford led off with a walk to
Kody Ruedisili and
McClain Bradley followed with a home run out to right field. It was his fifth home run of the season and gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead. Both teams had singles in the second inning and left a runner on base.

With one out in the third, the Bulldogs had a runner reach on a walk and he moved to second on a wild pitch. Back-to-back fielding errors by the Terriers led to one run scoring and then a single tied the game at 2-2. A double play turned by Wofford ended the top of the third inning. The Terriers stranded runners at second and third after a walk by
McClain Bradley and a single by
Brett Hash.

In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs led off with a single. With one out, a single along with a fielding error allowed a run to score for a 3-2 advantage. Wofford opened the bottom of the fourth with a walk by
Mack Nathanson and a single from
Max McDougald. After a bunt single, a ground out by
Alex Malsch scored Nathanson to tie the game at 3. Samford added a single in the top of the fifth with two outs, but the runner was left on base.

McClain Bradley led off the bottom of the fifth by reaching second base on a throwing error. With two outs, Bradley stole third and
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch.
Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a hit by pitch to
Max McDougald for a 4-3 lead. A bases loaded walk to
Brett Rodriguez added a run for a 5-3 advantage, but a strikeout left the bases loaded at the end of the frame.

After a Bullodgs led off the sixth with a runner reaching on an error, a single and ground out had runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Troy Dixon drove in a run for a 5-4 score and a strikeout ended the top half. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth,
Brett Hash doubled. A double by
Carson Waln scored Hash and then a double by
Andrew Orzel scored Waln for a 7-4 lead.

Both sides were retired in order in the seventh inning. Samford led off the eighth with a double a double with one out by Anthony Mulrine drove in a run to make it 7-5. A single put runners on the corners, but a caught stealing at second ended the top of the eighth.
Kody Ruedisili was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the eighth, but was caught stealing second to end the inning. In the top of the ninth, a bunt single led things off. A walk with one out was followed by a double play to end the game.

Wofford starter
Adam Scott (5-3) went seven innings and allowed four unearned runs on seven hits. He struck out seven batters and walked one.
Matt Ellmyer threw one and a third innings with one run allowed on four hits, plus he had one strikeout.
Cole Bradley earned his first career save by getting the final two outs in the ninth.

Cody Shelton (3-1) was the Bulldogs starter and threw 4.2 innings with five runs allowed on four hits, along with six strikeouts. Jared Brasher walked one batter and hit two. Tristan Widra went 1.1 innings with two runs allowed on three hits and a strikeout. Tanner Cunningham threw the final two innings and did not allow a hit.

Wofford and Samford will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 2:00 p.m. due to rain expected in the area on Sunday.
