Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader against Samford on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. In the first game, Samford scored five runs in the fifth inning and held the Terriers scoreless until the eighth frame for an 8-2 win. Wofford led 4-1 after five innings in the second game. The Bulldogs scored two in the seventh to make it a one run game, but the Terriers added two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the 6-3 win.
                    
Wofford is 22-18 on the season and 7-5 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 22-17 overall and 5-7 in the league. The Terriers claimed the series win over the Bulldogs for the third time in the last four seasons.  Pitching highlighted both games, as Samford's Mikail Cazenave threw a complete game in the first contest and Wofford's Austin Higginbotham went the distance in the second game.
 
In the first game, the Bulldogs led off with a single. After a failed pickoff attempt, the runner was on second when a two-out single drove in the first run of the game. The Terriers had Brett Hash reach on an error in the bottom of the first, but he was left on base. Samford opened the second inning with back-to-back walks. After a caught stealing and strikeout, Troy Dixon hit a home run to right center for a 3-0 lead for the Bulldogs. Cody Miller singled for the Terriers in the bottom of the second, but a double play ended the inning.
 
After Samford was retired in order in the top of the third inning, Reed Massey led off the bottom half with a single, but was caught stealing. In the fourth inning, Samford left a pair of runners on base after a strikeout/wild pitch and walk. Wofford went in order to end the fourth inning. The Bulldogs opened the fifth inning with a single and the runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A double drove in a run for a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and a double to left center added two runs. A ground out and single both plated runs as Samford took an 8-0 lead in the middle of the fifth inning.
 
Cody Miller led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, but the Bulldogs turned a double play. Max McDougald added a single, but was left on base. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top of the sixth on a double, walk and error before a double play ended the scoring chance. Wofford had back-to-back singles from Alex Malsch and Kody Ruedisili to lead off the bottom of the sixth. A double play and strikeout ended the sixth inning.
 
The Bulldogs had two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the scoring chance. Wofford went in order to end the seventh inning. After the Bulldogs stranded a pair of runners in the top of the eighth, the Terriers led off with a single by Ty Reginelli. Reed Massey then hit a shot over the fence in left field. It was his third home run of the season and cut the Samford lead to 8-2. Dylan May was hit by a pitch, but the Terriers were unable to plate another run.
 
In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs added a single with two outs. A fielder's choice ended the top half. Wofford had one out in the bottom of the ninth when Mack Nathanson walked. A fly out and strikeout ended the first game.
 
Wofford starter Spencer Kulman (7-3) went 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs on six hits. He struck out six, but walked five. Quintin Pile worked 1.2 innings and did not allow a run on two hits and a pair of walks, along with a strikeout. Jacob Hershman did not allow a run on one hit in an inning on the mound. Grant Byers worked an inning with one hit allowed. Elliot Lance gave up one hit in an inning.
 
Mikhail Cazenave (3-5) went the complete nine innings for the Bulldogs. He allowed two runs, both in the eighth inning, one eight hits. He struck out eight batters and walked only one. It was his first complete game this season.
 
Game two began with a bunt single for the Bulldogs, but the runner was stranded at second base. Wofford was retired in order to end the first inning. Samford led off the second with a single and with two outs an RBI single gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. After Wofford went in order to end the second inning, the Bulldogs left one on base in the top of the third after a single.
 
Max McDougald led off the bottom of the third with a single and Alex Malsch walked with one out. A single by Kody Ruedisili loaded the bases with one out and a sacrifice fly by McClain Bradley tied the game at 1-1. An RBI single to right field by Brett Hash gave Wofford a 2-1 lead. Samford left one runner on base in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Wofford opened the bottom of the fourth with a double by Carson Waln. A single with one out by Mack Nathanson put runners on the corners and a ground out by Max McDougald added a run for a 3-1 score. The Bulldogs led off the fifth inning with back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners. A fielder's choice resulted in the lead runner out at home and a fly ball ended the scoring chance.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, McClain Bradley hit a solo home run to left field for a 4-1 lead. It was his sixth home run of the season. Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. The Bulldogs had one out in the when Troy Dixon doubled and T.J. Dixon drove him in on a triple for a 4-2 score. A ground out added a run and the Wofford lead was 4-3 at the seventh inning stretch.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs led off the eighth with a walk. The runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt, but a strikeout and fly ball ended the top half. Kody Ruedisili led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and McClain Bradley followed with a double. With one out, Carson Waln doubled to right field to drive in two runs, but he was out trying to stretch it to a triple. A strikeout ended the eighth inning with Wofford holding a 6-3 lead. In the top of the ninth with one out, a runner reached on a hit by pitch. A strikeout and fly ball to right field ended the contest.
 
Austin Higginbotham (3-4) started for the Terriers and threw his second complete game of the season. He allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out seven batters while walking only one.
 
Samford starter Stephen Jones (2-3) went four innings with three runs allowed on five hits, along with four strikeouts. Josh Rich threw two innings with a solo home run allowed and a strikeout. Wyatt Burns worked the final two innings with two runs allowed on three hits, along with three strikeouts.
 
Wofford will host Charleston Southern on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m. in Lexington, S.C. at the home of the Lexington County Blowfish. The Terriers will then begin a three game series at East Tennessee State University on Friday.
