Baseball Falls 4-3 To VMI

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the opening game of the weekend series, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 4-3 by VMI on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored twice in the second inning, but the Keydets tied things up with two runs in the fourth. VMI added a run in the fifth and seventh innings and held the Terriers to one run in the final six innings for the win.
                    
Wofford is 16-15 on the season and 2-2 in the Southern Conference. VMI is 16-15 overall and 3-4 in the league. Both teams had eight hits on the night. Wofford was led by Brett Hash and Max McDougald with two hits each. Peyton Maddox and Matt Dunlevy had two hits each for the Keydets. Wofford stole nine bases in the game, while the Keydets committed five errors.
 
The Keydets had one hit in the top of the first inning and the Terriers had singles from McClain Bradley and Brett Hash in the bottom of the first. After VMI was retired in order, Max McDougald reached on an error and Alex Malsch walked. On a double steal, a throwing error allowed McDougald to score. A sacrifice fly by Kody Ruedisili made it a 2-0 game.
 
In the third inning, the Keydets were retired in order and Wofford had one hit. VMI loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning on a walk, hit by pitch and single. A single to left center by Matt Dunlevy drove in two runs to tie the game. The Keydets left a pair of runners on base at the end of the top half of the fourth. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Max McDougald and Alex Malsch singled to put runners on first and third before a fly ball ended the scoring chance.
 
With one out in the top of the fifth, a Keydet walked and stole second. A single by Peyton Maddox with two outs scored a run to give VMI a 3-2 lead. Wofford left a runner on base to end the fifth frame and VMI stranded one in the top of the sixth. Carson Waln led off the bottom of the sixth by reaching on an error. A hit and run by Max McDougald gave the Terriers runners on the corners with one out. A walk with two outs loaded the bases, but a strikeout left the runners stranded.
 
A solo home run by Collin Fleischer with one out in the top of the seventh gave the Keydets a 4-2 lead. McClain Bradley led off the bottom of the seventh by being hit by a pitch. He stole second and went to third on an error. A sacrifice fly by Mack Nathanson cut the advantage to 4-3. The Keydets were retired in order in the top of the eighth and the Terriers left one on base in the bottom half after a single by Kody Ruedisili.
 
VMI left a runner on second base in the top of the ninth after a single and throwing error. In the bottom of the ninth, McClain Bradley led off with a walk. He stole second and third and Carson Waln walked with two outs and then advanced to second. A strikeout ended the game with the Keydets winning 4-3.  
 
Adam Scott (3-3) started for the Terriers and in seven innings gave up four runs on seven hits. He struck out ten batters, reaching the double digit mark for the fourth time this season, and walked two. Cole Bradley threw a career-long two innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
 
Josh Winder (5-2) was the Keydets starter and went six innings with seven hits allowed. He gave up two unearned runs and struck out seven batters, along with three walks. Ryan Bennett earned his fourth save of the year by going three innings with one run allowed on one hit, plus five strikeouts.
 
Wofford will continue the three game series against VMI on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
