Baseball Falls At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 1-0 on Thursday afternoon by The Citadel at Riley Park. The Bulldogs scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
                    
Wofford is 26-28 on the season and 11-11 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 16-32 overall and 7-15 in league play. The Terriers had six hits in the game, including two by Max McDougald. The Bulldogs also had six hits, while William Kinney had the lone RBI.
 
Kody Ruedisili opened the game with a single, but two strikeouts and a caught stealing ended the top half of the first. The Bulldogs had a runners on the corners with one out after a pair of singles. A sacrifice fly made it 1-0 at the end of the first inning. Both team had singles with two outs in the second inning. Alex Malsch walked to lead off the third inning and Kody Ruedisili walked with one out, but both runners were stranded. The Citadel went in order to end the third inning.
 
In the fourth inning, both teams were retired in order. Max McDougald started the fifth inning with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch, but was unable to score. The Bulldogs went in order to end the fifth inning. Carson Waln doubled with two outs in the top of the sixth. Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout ended the top half. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs had an infield single. A fly ball and strikeout ended the sixth inning.
 
Max McDougald led off the seventh with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A strikeout and fly ball sent the game to the seventh inning stretch. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs had a runner on second after a hit and error. A fly ball and strikeout left the runner on third base. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. The Bulldogs led off their half of the eighth with a single. A sacrifice bunt, intentional walk and ground out moved runners to second and third. A pop up to third ended the scoring chance.
 
Mack Nathanson singled to start the ninth inning. A fly ball was followed by a ground out to advance Nathanson to second base. A strikeout ended the game with a 1-0 final score.
 
Wofford starter Adam Scott (6-5) threw a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out six batters and walked one.
 
J.P. Sears (7-2) started for the Bulldogs and went six innings without allowing a run on four hits. Sears, who is second in the nation in total strikeouts, added twelve strikeouts and walked two. Jordan Buster earned the save (4) by going the final three innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts.
 
The series with The Citadel continues on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Southern Conference Tournament begins for Wofford on Wednesday, May 24 at Fluor Field in Greenville.
