Baseball Wins 7-4 At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Friday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team picked up a 7-4 win over The Citadel at Riley Park. The Terriers and Bulldogs were tied at four after five innings, but the Terriers scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to secure the victory.
                    
Wofford is 27-28 on the season and 12-11 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 16-33 overall and 7-16 in league play. The Terriers had three hits each by McClain Bradley and Brett Hash, with Bradley driving in two runs. J.D. Davis led the Bulldogs with three hits.
 
After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs had a single with two outs. A walk was followed by a strikeout to end the opening frame. Mack Nathanson reached on a fielding error in the top of the second, but was left on second base. The Citadel was retired in order to end the second inning.
 
Cody Miller walked to lead off the third inning and Alex Malsch was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position and a single up the middle by McClain Bradley gave Wofford a 2-0 lead. Brett Hash added a single, however the Terriers left two on base in the middle of the third. The Bulldogs had a bunt single to start the bottom of the third inning. A walk with two outs was followed by a fielding error that allowed a run to score. A single added a run and the score was tied at 2-2 at the end of the third inning.
 
The Terriers had singles from Max McDougald and Alex Malsch in the top of the fourth inning. An RBI single from Kody Ruedisili scored McDougald for a 3-2 lead, but Malsch was out at third on the play to end the top half. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs had back-to-back singles. Another single plated a run to tie the game at 3-3 before a foul out ended the fourth inning. McClain Bradley led off the fifth with a double and a single by Brett Hash gave the Terriers a 4-3 lead. A double play ended the top half. The Bulldogs had a double with one out in the bottom of the fifth. A single, combined with a fielding error, allowed a run to score and the game was tied at 4-4.
 
Reed Massey opened the sixth inning with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Alex Malsch was called safe at first on an infield single and Massey scored for a 5-4 lead. The Bulldogs led off their half of the sixth with a walk and a sacrifice bunt, but the runner was stranded at second base. McClain Bradley and Brett Hash singled to start the seventh inning. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position and a ground out by Mack Nathanson gave the Terriers a 6-4 advantage. An infield single by Reed Massey drove in Hash as Wofford led 7-4 in the middle of the seventh. The Bulldogs were retired in order to end the seventh inning.
 
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Kody Ruedisili singled before a fielder's choice ended the half. The Citadel was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth. Mack Nathanson was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the ninth, but was unable to advance. The Bulldogs had back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the ninth. An infield fly was followed by a fly ball for the second out. A fly ball to center field was caught by Kody Ruedisili for the final out and a 7-4 win.
 
Wofford starter Austin Higginbotham (6-5) threw six innings with four runs allowed on eight hits, with three of the four runs unearned. He had three strikeouts and issued three walks. Spencer Kulman earned his first save of the season, and second of his career, by going the final three innings. Kulman did not allow a run on two hits in the ninth inning.
 
Will Abbott (1-7) started for the Bulldogs and went 5.2 innings with five runs allowed on nine hits, along with four strikeouts. Aaron Lesiak threw two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on two hit. Marlin Morris went the final 2.2 innings and did not allow a run on two hits with three strikeouts.
 
The series with The Citadel will conclude on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Southern Conference Tournament begins for Wofford on Wednesday, May 24 at Fluor Field in Greenville. The Terriers will be either the #4 or #5 seed and play at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
