Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team dropped its season opener 3-0 to Coastal Carolina on Friday evening at Snyder Field.
More than halfway through the first half the game was scoreless, but thanks to a goal from Daniella Famili Coastal Carolina took the lead and never looked back. They added two goals late in the second half to secure the season opening win.
The teams battled back and forth in the first half, trading scoring opportunities early in the game. The Chanticleers had a great chance in the penalty area but solid goal keeping from
Alex Carroll kept them off the board. Coastal Carolina's Daniella Famili finally broke through with a rebound goal in the 34
th minute of the first half.
In the 69
th minute, Mackenzie Gibbs finished a cross out of the right corner from Elisabeth Rockill to put the Chanticleers up 2-0. Coastal Carolina concluded the scoring in the 81
st minute with a goal from Brooke Horist from the left side of the penalty area.
Despite the loss, the Terriers totaled nine shots and seven corner kicks in the game.
Hayley Younginer led the team with four shots and one shot on goal.
Alex Carroll finished with 5 saves in the contest.
The Terriers move to 0-1 on the season and travel to Asheville on Sunday where they will face UNC Asheville at 1:00 pm.
