ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team picked up its first road win of the season with a 3-0 sweep at Winthrop on Tuesday evening. The meeting was the first between the programs since 2014 and the first Wofford win over Winthrop since 2000. With the win, Wofford improves 2-2 on the season, while Winthrop falls to 1-3.
Catie Cronister led Wofford offensively. The sophomore threw down a match high 18 kills and hit .400 on the night. Her 18 kills ties for fifth in Wofford history in three set matches. She also added 14 digs on the defensive end.
Colleen Reilly followed suit as the middle blocker hit .375 with nine kills and just three errors on 16 attempts. Bijonae Jones and
Taylor Gill finished with 15 and 14 digs, respectively, while sophomore setter
Lorissa King had 43 assists.
The first set started off evenly matched. Wofford led 11-7 after an ace by
Madeline Savage but Winthrop went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to one. The Terriers held on to the lead and after rallying off three in a row, forced a Winthrop with a 19-15 lead. Gill served an ace on the first play out the timeout and served the Terriers to six straight points to give Wofford a 22-15 lead. Wofford wouldn't look back, winning 25-19. Reilly was a major factor in the first set as the junior hit .778 with seven kills and zero errors on nine swings.
The teams swapped points to begin the second set. Down 3-5, Wofford scored the next six to take a 9-5 lead. Winthrop rattled off the next three to cut the lead to one and then took the lead at 11-10. Winthrop led until Wofford tied it at 19. The Eagles regained the lead and forced a Wofford timeout with the Terriers down 22-20. Cronister rallied off two kills to even the score and Winthrop took a timeout. The Terriers scored the next three points and finished on a 5-0 run to end the set and take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Wofford got on the scoreboard first in the third set and led until Winthrop took a 10-9 lead. Trailing 13-11, Wofford won the next six points to reclaim the lead 17-13. Winthrop wouldn't go down without a fight, however. Wofford led 23-18, but Winthrop scored three in a row to cut into the lead. Wofford called a timeout and won two of the next three to close out out the set and win the match.
The Terriers return to the court Friday, Sept. 1 against USC Upstate in the AmericInn Runnin' Bulldogs Invitational, hosted by Gardner-Webb. Wofford will play NC Central (1:30 p.m.) and Gardner-Webb (4:00 p.m.) Sunday as part of the tournament.
