BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team swept both USC Upstate and NC Central 3-0 on Friday in the AmericInn Runnin' Bulldogs Invitational, hosted by Gardner-Webb.  Wofford beat USC Upstate 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23 and NC Central 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17 to go unbeaten on the day. After today's action, Wofford's record stands at 4-2 and has won the last three matches all by 3-0 scores.
"I'm really pleased with how we played today," said head coach
Lynze Roos. "We did a wonderful job of ball control. Taylor (Gill) did a great job controlling the defense and giving Lorissa (King) balls she could work with to set up our offensive attack. Madeline (Savage) also did a great job on the back row. Anytime we can win the serve and pass it sets us up to play our best ball."
In the first match, Catie Cronister set a Wofford record for most kills in a three set match with 28. Her 52 swings ties the Wofford record for attempts in a three set match as well. She hit .423 to lead all players. The 28 kills and .423 hitting percentage are both season highs for Cronister.
Kara Shacklette also added 10 digs with just one error on 22 attempts and hit .409 on the match.
Gill (15),
Bijonae Jones (13) and Savage (12) anchored the defense as they all had 12 + digs. King had 46 assists, tied for third in Wofford history in a three set match, while Reilly added four blocks.
Wofford hit .287 as a team and held USC Upstate to a .132 mark. Wofford hadn't beaten USC Upstate since 2013 and broke a three match losing streak.
In the second match, three Terriers hit above .500 and the play from Wofford's middles was unmatched. Shacklette, a sophomore, led all players with 11 kills and hit .562, thanks to just two errors on 16 attempts. Reilly, a junior, hit 600 with 10 kills and just one error on 15 swings. Reilly's .600 hitting percentage ties for eighth in Wofford history in a match.
Bella Santoro hit .556 with five kills and zero errors in nine tries.
Lauren Miller added six kills and hit .231.
Again, the defense was solid as five players had atleast four digs. Gill, the libero, led with nine, while Cronister followed with six. Santoro and Savage followed with five and Jones added four. King had another strong showing, contributing 37 assists.
Wofford hit .311, the team's highest percentage in a match all season. The Terriers held the Eagles to a .119 percentage.
Wofford concludes play in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. against host school Gardner-Webb.
